I’ve got some images from your Japanese PR agent as your inspiration source, and found young Giorgio Armani himself in a couple of photos.

Michael:Yeah, I love his personal style. Because his personal style is more balanced. The way he dresses is more on the traditional side. What he wears is very interesting, the shirt and everything, super interesting. Armani is great. When I was growing up in California in the 80’s, Armani was still a very small designer in America. But as I grew older, I began to appreciate him more. Because Armani is not just about tradition, but about fashion. Armani is trying to push forward fashion and break through a wall.

Understood.

mta_003.jpg

Michael:This is a magazine from the 80’s. This looks really old, as I’m getting old now. This is published in April 1986. I was 15 years old then. I just happen to have this. This is like typical 80’s style in America. This is like GAP, and all those kinds of companies. Some of them don’t even exist anymore. Anyway, look at this. I love this story, this feeling, you know. This is Ralph Lauren. When I was young, I used to really like this. But as I get older, this is so much cooler.

I see. By the way, How did you decide on the theme for this collection?

Michael:I spent almost 20 years in France, and I really have big respects for the French houses, like Hermes, Louis Vuitton, and those old houses. Their products really represent their culture from where they are made. When you buy something Vuitton, you buy something French. When you buy something Hermes, you feel like this is French. I was an American who was working in Paris, but in order for my collection to be strong, I felt like maybe it’s better if I go home, and deeply reflect something American or Californian. And this is very complicated. How do you do that? For instance, COMME des GARÇONS or Yohji Yamamoto is successful doing that as Japanese designers. But how does a young designer reflect Japan in a modern-traditional way, not in like a kitsch, cliché way? That’s when Armani and “American Gigolo” came into my mind. The movie was based in California. You know he was a character in California. And Armani was dressing him in a very modern way, in a way no American could do. Because, American, we still live this. We still wear this. We still think about English tradition. Herringbone tweed, or gothic New York way, you know? When Armani did American Gigolo, he just looked at California style, like Nature, perfect for brown color, camel color, silk, this you can wear in Paris. You cannot wear in London. Of course, you can, It’s more French, or Italian version of California. So when I came back, for the first two years, I did kind of what I was doing in Europe. But it’ complicated, because I want to put this in , you know. My inspiration, I always want to work with tradition.

I got it.

Michael:Armani, somehow in this collection, he’s saying like “don’t take tradition so serious. Have fun and play.” I’m thinking like Armani is saying to me when I look at his work. He says, “Try something. Break the form.” Americans have hard time breaking it. Even someone like Thom Browne, I like very much what he does, but still his theme is to make it shorter and is still kind of little bit proportioned. Of course, in his world, embroider, but the outline is still almost the same. Inside, totally crazy, funny thing, but the outline is still the same. You know the material is still the same. Tweed, wool, flannel, check, oxford, you know it’s still like frozen. He’s doing very interesting things, but still so frozen. But Armani is more like fabric, texture, and cut, Armani is like leather, thinking more texture. So, I’m working on this idea of California, so of course more California fabric, but also California way. You know more casual, more elegant… Forget this NY London Anglo-Saxon vision. Try to make it more southern, like Havana…

Latin?

mta_007.jpg

Michael:Yes, Latin. I’m Mexican myself, so more Brazilian, more Cuban, you know. That of course is traditional Californian.

So, basically you are exploring where your authenticity is. After spending many years in Paris, you’re now looking into yourself and trying to figure out what your authenticity is.

Michael:Yes. What is Michael Tapia? I want to express that in clothing. Personally, I’m not flashy. I wouldn’t wear like a crazy jacket or something very crazy. I always have to think I’m on the street in downtown. For instance, if I’m wearing this crazy jacket in front of hotel in downtown, people think, “Ooh! Who’s this weirdo?” But if I’m like this, they won’t notice me. When I pass, no one notices.. If someone has good tastes, he/she might say, “oh interesting.” It’s not because of a flashy jacket or anything. This is my thinking, you know. But fashion is always about forcing you to react.

Understood. To sum up, after returning from Paris, you decided to create a collection reflecting American tradition, authentic California, and your own authenticity. And to realize it, you didn’t take an “ English/American” approach, but took a freer way just like Armani had done in “American Gigolo,” right?
