トム：今日はロンドンにある僕の大好きなレコードショップを紹介するよ。でも、今回
は友達のEIICHIに話してもらうね。
IF MUSIC、イギリスにある本当にインディペンデントなレコードショップ
トムが紹介してくれたレコードショップについてお話したいと思います。
オックスフォード•サーカスからリージェント•ストリートを北に上がり、
いくつかの道を入ったところに、そのレコードショップはある。住所は、36,
Langham St。確かに、IF MUSICという看板が出ている。でも、外
から見た限り、その建物はロンドンによくある家のひとつにしか見えない。IF MUSIC
のサインがあるインターフォンを鳴らすとドアの鍵が開き、階段を上がる
と３階にある一室のドアが開けられている。迎えてくれるのは、渋いスーツに身を包ん
だJean-Claude Thompsonという男。この男こそが、この極
めて稀有なレコードショップのオーナーである。音楽に詳しいひとたちにとって、
Jean Claudeは二人組のユニットAmalgamation of
Soundzのひとりと言ったほうが早いだろう。DJそしてユニットとしての活動と並行し
て、2003年にBerwick Street Marketの近くに
If Musicをオープンさせた。しかしながら、世界的に進む音楽業界の環境の変化に伴
い、２年前にその店舗をたたみ規模を縮小させ、今の場所に店を移した。
本人としては苦渋の決断だっただろうが、Jean-Claudeと話す限り、悲観的なことはあ
まり感じられない。それよりも、ここを訪れたひとは、彼の美学が貫
かれた、まるで個人的なギャラリーのようなこのレコードショップの雰囲気に感銘を
受けるだろう。Jean-Claude自身による厳選されたレコード、視聴する
ためのターンテーブルやヘッドフォン、そしてお客がリラックスして音楽を聴くため
の心地良いソファまである。またオーナー自身が飲み物まで出してくれる。これを
単なるレコードショップと呼んでしまうことはできないだろう。
さて、少しJean-Claude自身について話そう。彼はハウスミュージックのDJとしてずっ
と活躍してきたし、90年代には頻繁に日本にも来ていた。当然、
ハウスミュージックには精通しているが、同時に、ユニットのプロダクションはチル
アウト的なものも少なくない。また本人と話し、またお店のレコードのセレクショ
ンを見ると、彼が相当ジャズに詳しいことも明らかである。結局のところ、彼はGood
Musicということだけにこだわっている人物なのだ。だから、自分がど
ういったレコードを望んでいるか伝えると、要望にもっともふさわしいものを選んで
くれるだろう。また、彼は「1」質問すると「10」返してくれる。音楽に関する
知識の量が凄まじい。話術にも非常に長けている人物で、ひとを決して飽きさせない。
なので、少しでも英語が話せるのなら、是非、レコードを買うだけでなく、彼と
のやりとりを楽しんで欲しい。そもそも本人自身がそういったやりとりが出来るよう
に、
このレコードショップともいうべきこのお店を、ポピュラー音楽の中心であるロンド
ンのど真ん中に音楽を愛してやまないひとたちのためにオープンさせ続けているの
だから。If you ever visit London and if you love music, this is the first
place you must go. IF MUSIC, one of the true independent record shop in UK
located in the hear of London.

I would like to introduce you all to one of my favourite shops in London, called "If Music". However, I thought best that Eiichi Sawado (music composer) who happened to be in Europe this past few weeks present it. With Eiichi, being the music aficionado he is, there is no better place then "If Music" for him to check out while in London....... It is one of the few sadly, true independent record shops in the UK. So i pass you onto Eiichi.......
I was very lucky to have been introduced to IF Music by Tom Kilbey. Walking north on Regent Street in the West End from Oxford Circus Station and while passing a couple of streets, you will reach 36 Langham Street where the shop is located. Luckily, there is a sign-board on the outside as without that there is no sign that IF Music is located here. It simply appears one of those beautiful London Townhouses (see picture). You will need to ring the bell, upon which the door opens. As you go up the staircase to the 2nd floor, you will find the door of one of the rooms open. In here you find the dapper and always suited Jean-Claude the owner of this rare record shop. For people who are especially familiar with the music scene in London and UK, he maybe more known as a member of Amalgamation of Soundz. Jean-Claude opened his record store in parallel with his DJing and production in 2003. The first store being located just off Berwick Street Market in Soho. Two years ago however, he decided to move the shop to its current location here due to the rapid changes of the environment in the music industry. I'm sure this must have been a difficult decision for him, however while i talked with Jean-Claude his positivity and belief is inspiring to feel and his core belief being it is about the music.
People who visit the store will be just memorised by the atmosphere he has created in an almost art-gallery like style which reflects Jean-Claude's aesthetic: brilliant selections of records, bespoke turntables with headphones, along with 60's vintage sofas enabling you to relax and listen to the music. How can i simply call this a mere record shop!!?
Let me explain a little bit about Jean-Claude himself, he has been extremely active as a DJ and visited Japan frequently during the 90's. Obviously, he has mastership with house music (the great Theo Parrish always refers to JC as he calls him whenever he is London for new sounds!!) but at the same time as this you can find a superb selection of Jazz, Latin and contemporary new music. All he cares in presenting is GOOD MUSIC -- when speaking with Jean-Claude it was apparent that after a while he had slowly picked my preference in music and presented me with 20-30 records that i had to listen to the knowledge he passed on to me about the music just superb. So to sum up for all my friends from Japan and elsewhere as as a matter of fact if you are able to speak English even just a little bit please visit "IF Music" this is the place to go in London if you love music.....
