Interview with Michael Tapia

For your creation and production, what do you think of LA as a tool, or as a base?

Michael:I worked in very good many factories in Milan and Paris. LA is totally different. you can do many things in LA. It’s not always luxury like in Europe. I don’t want to do just jeans and T-shirts. Of course, I do jeans, but I don’t want to do typical LA jeans, T-shirts, sweats. I still want to make elegant stuff such as an elegant jacket or trousers, I can’t do like in Italy, so I have to learn how to do it in LA. For me, it was very difficult for the first two years, because I was trying to make like Italy. Forget that. So, how in LA can I do elegant stuff, but in an easy way? For me, coming to LA was about letting go. So, how do I make the jacket in an easy LA way, but still cool, still fashion? I’m almost two years back, and this last year, I really began to understand how to work in LA. LA has so much. When I left Paris, my goal was to live in, design in, manufacture in, export products, not super luxury products, but good products in one city. I take my car, go to the factory, come home and sleep in my bed. No airplane, no train, but in one city with most options. You can’t do it in Milan, in Paris, nor in London. Rome maybe. Maybe Portugal. Porto, yes! You can do it in NY as well, but I don’t want to be in NY. And in LA, yes. Printing, fabric, dying, sewing, leather, in one city within 15 minutes.

mta_009.jpg

I hear there’s a fashion district to the south of downtown. And Portugal is like a factory for Paris, right?

Michael:Yeah, exactly. Porto is very small. But the price is good in Portugal. Quality is good. And you can do many things. But I don’t want to live in Porto. I’m nothing against Portugal. They have a good soccer team. Of course, producing in America is expensive in reality. It’s expensive. Not like fashion reality, but real reality. It’s expensive. But It’s not like France nor in Italy. You can still make good product at a reasonable price. But in Fashion, like Berluti, 5000 dollars for a leather jacket. OK, beautiful, but it’s crazy expensive. Here in LA, you can make things like it’s still expensive, but we can still find value. So how do I as a designer, add value into the garment? You know what is my value? Because I can do everything in LA. I can’t do tailoring. But I can do a lot. If my head is straight, I can do everything.

mta_010.jpg

I see. So it’s all about understanding how you can work in LA, and adding value to the garments as a designer. Where in LA are you from?

Michael:I grew up in Claremont. Claremont is 45 minutes eastbound from Pasadena by car. There are five very good colleges such as Pomona College. There’s also Harvey Mudd, a famous engineering school. Not so famous like Harvard or Yale, but very good schools. And my grandfather used to manage 45 acres of lemon orchard in the 50’s. It sounds huge, but in California in the 50’s or the 40’s, it’s nothing. My mother grew up there. Now there are luxury houses instead. Actually, Snoop Dogg owns a house there too. In the 70’s, my family sold the land, because the pollution killed the citrus. And of course, the land became more valuable.

B.D SHIRT

mta_012.jpg
MARINE PULL OVER

mta_013.jpg
BODER STRIPE T-SHIRTS

When you launched your brand in Paris, you started with pants only. Even now you have a denim line called El Camino Real. Do you have any special passion for pants?

Michael:Yes, it’s true. I make a lot of pants and I like to make pants. And my first products were pants. Because jacket is so complicated and takes so long to make. Pants are less complicated in a way, but always difficult to buy. Good fitting pants are very hard to find.

I totally agree.

mta_014.jpg

Michael:But when I actually started making pants, it took me two years to make the first pair. The fashion scene was totally different in the late 90’s. When I started in Paris, Helmut Lang was still in Paris. Hedi Slimane was designing for Yves Saint Laurent rive gauche HOMME. Jill Sander was doing nice things you know. I had thought it would be easy to make pants, but n the process of making the first collection, I really began to understand that pants were very complicated.Still, I always think about pants first. I guess I’m obsessed about pants. You know I love to make jackets, too, but when I’m thinking about a total look, I think about pants first. Because when you change in the morning, you first put your pants on, right? Sometimes I wish I just made pants, not anything else.

That’s really interesting.

Michael:And LA is a “pants” city. All the biggest denim companies are in LA. It’s not a “shirt” city. It’s about T-shirts and jeans. I feel comfortable here because LA is bottoms-oriented. NY is a “jacket” city or a “shirt” city, I think.

DOHENY JEAN

mta_016.jpg
WHITE DENIM PANTS(EL CAMINO REAL)

Your have several other iconic items that you always make. Sweat is one of them but my favorite is wide spread shirts. It feels like this is an iconic item of your brand.

Michael:Yeah, I love that, too. I prefer spread collar to point collar. It’s more elegant and modern for me. Point collar is almost like button down without buttons. More like Brooks Brothers.

I see. You prefer spread collar. By the way, I think your fans in Japan tend to be those who have certain knowledge about fashion. How do you feel your brand is accepted in Japan? Do you ever hear any feedbacks from Japanese customers?

Michael:It’s an interesting question. My Japanese agent is Taku from MORERIDE. He’s been my agent for 15 years or something. Do you know I used to do some consulting for the japanese enterprise for almost 13 years in Japan from 1998 to 2012?

I didn’t know about it.

mta_017.jpg

Michael:So, I used to go to Japan 6 times a year for 13 years until 2012, right before I move to LA, then I quit. So, I used to be in Japan a lot, and I could get some feeling. United Arrows held an event for me, where I could personally talk with the customers. But honestly, I don’t really know what Japanese think about my work. Of course, Japan is a very important market for me, and I do very good business in Japan. Some designers that are very famous in NY and Paris don’t sell as much as I do in Japan. And I can’t explain about it. Some people ask me “ Michael, why do you sell so much in Japan?” I say, “ I don’t know”. Japan has lots of talented designers, and I think they are at their best right now. So, why do they like my stuff? I can say one thing for sure, though. It’s so important, but I think is often overlooked. That is I’ve always maintained a very high level of fit. In the beginning, you don’t really notice. But if you buy my stuff, and keep wearing it for a while, you’ll begin to appreciate it.

I totally agree.

Michael:And the quality. The quality of textile, sewing, fit, these are super important to me. And when you wear my stuff over time, the quality lasts. But in the fashion world, people don’t care about it. Honestly, fashion is about performances and about concepts. But for me the quality matters most. You have my stuff and it’s very good. That's the most import thing. So, to answer your question, the customers who have certain knowledge about fashion tend to share this feeling with me. That’s why they continue to look at my stuff.
