In this series, we’ve been following his efforts in Africa, and now an event is being held where those efforts are set to bear fruit.
The event will feature a comprehensive exhibition and sale of African antiques collected by Mr. Sakamoto during his travels through six West African countries: Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Benin, and Togo. The venue is the gallery "COMMON UNCOMMON Gallery".
The exhibition features over 100 works, including special pieces dating back more than 200 years.
The exhibition centers on African masks, which embody not only beauty but also a cultural context deeply intertwined with faith, rituals, and daily life. It features a collection of highly rare items that Mr. Sakamoto acquired after negotiating with dealers he would not normally have access to, and after tracking down niche markets based on firsthand accounts from the field.
In addition, colorful jewelry made with local antique beads will be on display.
The event will run for 16 days, from Saturday, January 17, to Sunday, February 1.
