The Japanese archipelago is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave. We don’t even need to start sentences with “This year…” anymore—it’s hot every year, after all. With that in mind, we’d like to share some useful information for those of you who want to stay cool and composed, even if only in spirit.

〈ARTS&SCIENCE〉 has launched its first fragrance product. Named 〈HIN ARTS&SCIENCE〉 in honor of “HIN,” a store specializing in crafts.

On Awaji Island—considered the birthplace of Japanese incense—each piece is carefully handcrafted by artisans, one by one, using time-honored methods and natural ingredients free of chemicals, while employing traditional machinery.

The concept is “purifying the space.”

"We aimed to create a fragrance that would purify the space without overwhelming it, and that would gently fill the air without dominating it with its scent," they said.

"Blue" ¥4,950
Inspired by lush, deep green foliage, this fragrance evokes an atmosphere of tranquility and cool freshness. It features a distinctive blend of hinoki—which combines a refreshing quality with an elegant sweetness—and tea tree, which offers a cool freshness with a subtle hint of bitterness.

"Kura" ¥4,950
Inspired by the origin of the place name “Zaimokuza” in Kamakura, this fragrance evokes a serene space where felled trees are stored. Centered around cedar, which evokes the feel of dry wood, it features a deep scent enhanced by smoky patchouli and refreshing eucalyptus.

"Kyō" ¥4,950
A soft, soothing atmosphere inspired by nature, moss, and ink—as if from the world of ink wash painting. It features a woody, spicy, quiet, and subtle fragrance with notes of sandalwood, moss, cypress leaves, and patchouli.

These incense sticks are said to have a much gentler scent compared to many of the incense products commonly found on the market. The creators reportedly aimed for a scent that blends harmoniously with the surrounding space.
