Nanami Okayamais an artist who creates photographs and three-dimensional works based on various objects encountered in daily life—such as everyday items, materials collected while traveling, and items given to her by others.

Her solo exhibition, “happy accident,” is currently on view at the “MIDORI.so Bakuroyokoyama Gallery.”

Her creative process involves collecting objects, documenting them, and returning them to everyday life. While she uses photography to document the existence of these objects, in her three-dimensional works she combines familiar materials to create new forms and reintroduce them into everyday life.

Influenced by folk art and crafts, she says she focuses on a careful appreciation of materials, ornamentation, and the playfulness found in everyday objects. By intuitively combining disparate elements, she creates new relationships between them, giving rise to a sense of humor, a slight sense of incongruity, and a feeling that is somehow familiar.

The exhibition title, “happy accident,” refers to how unintended events can lead to unexpected outcomes. Chance encounters, small daily choices, and unforeseen events can sometimes lead to something new.
