Yacraph, a brand that creates clothing primarily from yak wool grown on the Mongolian plains, is launching.
The concept is “Clothing that is quiet, strong, and full of life. Clothing that arrives only once a year, in winter.”
Yaks are animals that have adapted to survive in harsh environments; in regions where temperatures can drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius, they grow a soft undercoat beneath their coarse outer fur. Yakraf uses this undercoat. We collect the hair that naturally sheds during the molting season and use it as raw material.
What’s interesting is their approach to color. The yak wool harvested each year varies slightly in hue, fiber thickness, and texture. That’s why, rather than dyeing the fabric uniformly, they create colors based on the unique characteristics of that year’s raw material. They say they aim to create garments that, much like a vintage of wine, will make people say, “The yak wool from that year was beautiful.”
The entire process—from sourcing raw materials to spinning, knitting, and finishing—is completed within Mongolia. The production facility still houses old Japanese-made whole-garment knitting machines, which allow each garment to be knitted seamlessly without the need for seams.
It’s not just about adding new things—it’s also about revitalizing existing technologies. That mindset is another hallmark of this brand.
