Born in 1995, artist soh souen is a young talent who has attracted attention for his work on the cover of Hiroshi Fujiwara's new album "SLUMBERS2" released in October.
His first solo exhibition since he changed his name from Hajime Kuwazono to soh souen will be held at the event space "The Mass" in Shibuya, Tokyo.
The exhibition, titled "A Modest Scream A Modest Scream," will feature the portrait "tie," which the artist has been working on since 2019, as well as the abstract pastel works "etude" and "caress and hug."
The portrait work "tie" is a pixelated photograph of an acquaintance's photo ID, which is then painted with oil to create an assemblage of dots. The artist's skillful sublimation of the ordinary subject matter of a certificate photo into art is nothing short of superb.
His abstract works such as "etude" and "caress and hug" are created using a unique technique in which he mixes pigments and soil to create original pastels and then paints directly on paper using his hands.
In addition to pastel works, the exhibition will also feature an installation of 25 herbs and fragrant woods collected under the theme of healing and purification, making this an exhibition where visitors can enjoy works with different atmospheres. The exhibition will run from Saturday, November 21 to Sunday, December 27.
