RAN TONDABAYASHI creates her works by combining motifs and words from her unique perspective, while genuinely capturing various moments in our daily lives, such as funny scenes and lovely events. At first glance, these works are charming, but at the same time, they provide us with a sense of danger and stimulation.
The fragmented, dreamlike images, with their distinct colors, could be said to reflect both RAN TONDABAYASHI's enormous desires and her own. Through her colorful and accessible works, she seems to inspire people's deepest, hidden desires, and to teach them the joy of having free tastes and sensibilities.
The title of this solo exhibition was "Dressing. Some of the works produced are situations that remind one of words such as illness and death , while others catch the eye with their more vivid colors and outlandish motifs.
Dressing up and adding color to one's appearance is an everyday activity that enhances one's original attractiveness, but sometimes greed and vanity are even reflected in one's appearance in a funny way. As the phrase "make-up for death" suggests, it can be seen as an inquiry into the greediness of human beings, who are obsessed with beauty and appearance until their lives are cut short.
Perhaps it is an appeal against the meaning and value of things that have been misrepresented, and that have lost even their essence, and against the tendency toward excess.
