—You work as a bookseller while also writing. What’s your typical day like?
I work full-time five days a week at a used bookstore called “Yomita-ya” in Kichijoji, and I generally write a daily journal entry on Note. When I decide to hold an exhibition, I start writing pieces for the show every day and then include them in the exhibition.
—When did you realize you liked writing?
It’s not so much that I “like” it, but people have been telling me since elementary school that I “can write in a way that’s easy to read.” I often won awards for book reports and essays. I’ve been writing diaries and short stories for a long time, but I was too embarrassed to show them to anyone. However, I started using Note around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, and from there, I gradually began sharing my writing publicly.
ANNIVERSARY 101 WIDE STRAIGHT SELVEDGE ¥ 30,800
A straight silhouette with a Selvage finish. The clean lines—neither too wide nor too narrow—make it a perfect match not only for casual looks but also for sophisticated outfits paired with a jacket.
—How would you describe your writing style?
When I meet people in person, they often tell me I’m cheerful, but the tone of my writing tends to lean toward the “dark” side—I try to bring out that shadowy, inner side of myself. People often point out that contrast, and I think it’s something I value myself. Lately, some visitors to my exhibitions have been surprised by how talkative I am. So, I’ve started writing “I talk a lot” in my exhibition profiles (laughs).
—I hear you have experience working in the apparel industry. Have you always been interested in fashion?
I really like it. My parents, who love clothes, had a big influence on me. That’s why I joined an apparel company right out of college. I did quit after a little over a year, though. After that, I moved to Tokyo and started working at “Yomitaya,” and that’s how I ended up where I am today. Back then, I never imagined I’d be doing this kind of work on my own, and when I first started using Note, it was really just with the hope that “it would be nice if some young customers came by.”
—Do you dress differently for work and in your personal life?
It might be quite different. When I'm at work, I make a point of dressing in a casual, relaxed style that gives off a used bookstore vibe. In my personal life, though, I prefer a more polished look. On my days off, I often wear a jacket or heels.
—Please tell us about Bun-san's fashion style as well.
I often choose work-style pants and pair them with heels. I think my personal style involves adding slightly dressy accessories to casual outfits. It does create a bit of an unbalanced look, though.
—By the way, have you ever worn jeans?
I think I probably got them as hand-me-downs from my dad. I think they were dark denim, just like the pair I wore today. My parents love denim, and they even had a pair custom-made at a local denim shop as a high school graduation gift for me. I tried wearing these “101” jeans while working, and the fabric is really soft and allows for easy movement. Since I’m always carrying books and cardboard boxes, I usually wear tough jeans that I don’t mind getting dirty, so the “101” is a perfect fit for work, too.
