override × Kihō Ogasawara (Freada)

Kihō Ogasawara / Director, Freada

After serving as the press representative for “FREAK’S STORE” for many years, she launched 〈Frida〉 in July 2017. The brand’s icon is Frida Kahlo, a female painter from Mexico. The items, born from a sense of style cultivated through exposure to a wide variety of fashion and the unique perspective of a vintage clothing enthusiast, have gained popularity for their positive color palettes and designs.

Definitely give it a try as a “pick-me-up” during your busy days.

I hear Mr. Ogasawara doesn't usually wear hats.

OgasawaraActually, that’s true (wry smile). Not that it’s exactly a substitute, but I’ve always liked wrapping a vintage scarf or other piece of fabric around my head, and I used to do it all the time. I used to wonder, “It’s so cute—why don’t more girls do this?” When I asked people around me, many said, “It’s hard to tie it neatly.” So I’d been thinking for a while, “Wouldn’t it be great if there were a hat that made it look like you were casually wearing a vintage scarf on your head?”

So, it’s an idea that came from your own experience, then.

OgasawaraThat's right. So when I was approached about this project, I shared my vision with "Override." They then proposed this "head wrap" design.

Please tell us what makes *Frida* unique.

OgasawaraThe concept behind *Frida* is “clothing for girls who love vintage clothes.” I’m one of them myself, and the kind of thing these girls like to wrap around their heads to accessorize is a vintage scarf. So, to capture that vibe, I’ve chosen fabrics with a slightly retro feel for this collection.

It’s true—this retro vibe really suits it.

OgasawaraSince we featured items made from repurposed vintage fabrics in our first collection as well, I think we were definitely able to capture our signature style.

Another key feature is that it's reversible.

OgasawaraThere are two variations: one features a floral print—a signature “Frida” design that works year-round—and the other features a komon pattern that reflects this season’s theme. The floral print version combines a glossy, smooth fabric with a textured cotton fabric, while the komon pattern version pairs a glossy, smooth fabric with a textured cotton fabric, creating a distinct difference in texture for each.

The way you wrap it changes how it looks—that’s the beauty of a reversible scarf. Plus, it’s super easy: just put it on and tie it. Why not give it a try yourself?

OgasawaraThat's right—it's surprisingly easy as long as you pay attention to where you tie the knot. The fabric is a bit longer than usual, so normally you'd wrap it all the way around and tie it, but if you tie it without wrapping it all the way around, it creates a ribbon-like effect that gives it a cute, slightly hippie vibe.

The fact that it can be worn regardless of your hairstyle—and yet still complement it—is one of the unique joys of women’s fashion, isn’t it?

OgasawaraI’m 34 this year, and as I’ve gotten older, my wardrobe has shifted toward more solid-colored, simple pieces. That’s why I hope you’ll consider adding this to your collection as a go-to option for mature, patterned styles. When there’s only a week left in the week, don’t you start feeling tired around Wednesday? When that happens, even styling your hair becomes a hassle—that’s when this comes in handy. All you have to do is tie your hair back in a single ponytail, and it looks great even with a simple solid-color outfit, so definitely give it a try as a quick fix and a styling pick-me-up! (lol)

The Style of Kiho Ogasawara (Freada)

Just like Frida Kahlo—the icon of her own brand, *Frida*—Ms. Ogasawara’s styling radiates an energetic glow that isn’t swayed by trends. “I hope people will embrace this as a go-to patterned piece for adults,” she says, introducing a floral-print headwrap that adds a positive touch to her bold outfits. Please also note how she adjusts her makeup to match the overall mood of the look.

Style1

The theme for this floral-print outfit is “a girl who’s just arrived at work at a vintage clothing store.” I paired it with a fluffy, voluminous fur coat and added a vintage-style scarf as an accent. I also made a point of tying the knot at the front to give it a kitschy feel. By the way, to complement the fresh, healthy vibe of the floral print, I’m wearing orange lipstick.

Style2

In this style, the polka-dot pattern is featured on the front, with the knot at the back. This makes the overall shape of the head appear smaller, helping to balance the look with a dress featuring generous draping—similar to what a Christian choir might wear. The chic, feminine polka-dot pattern helps tone down the bold, bright red outfit. I also tweaked my makeup a bit, finishing with a bold look using bright red lipstick.

A headwrap that captivates with the interplay of colors and patterns in its fabric.

override × Kiho Ogasawara (Freada) REVERSIBLE HEADWRAP ¥7,900 each + TAX (On sale Friday, November 16)

Inspired by the idea that “it would be nice to have a hat that looks like you’re simply wrapping a vintage scarf around your head,” Ms. Ogasawara chose a headwrap. There are two designs: a colorful floral print paired with polka dots, and a chic komon pattern paired with a paisley print in the same color. The former expresses the brand’s signature cheerful style, while the latter features a black base color—a color frequently seen in this season’s collection.
