Keen is getting into trail running in earnest. We attended an event to try out the latest ROHM.

“KEEN defines ”anywhere without a ceiling” as the outdoors and offers innovative hybrid footwear made using manufacturing methods that reduce environmental impact. In July 2025, the brand launched the “SEEK” trail running shoe, which incorporates the expertise cultivated in the outdoor field since its founding in 2003. Now, with the arrival of the highly anticipated new model, “ROAM,” KEEN’s trail running category is officially taking off.

The "Seek" features a QuantumFoamX midsole that combines a soft, comfortable feel with energy return, offering springy cushioning for a smooth running experience.

The 4mm rubber lugs deliver exceptional durability and traction; in fact, Heeluxe—a company that scientifically evaluates shoes—has demonstrated that they can withstand 925 miles (approximately 1,500 km) of running. The 6mm heel-to-toe drop, combined with Keen’s signature wide forefoot design, promotes a natural foot strike and proper toe spread while running.

While the "Seek" offers the ultimate in comfort and high performance for trail running, the new "Rome" is a multi-surface model designed to adapt to any terrain.

Featuring a 3mm tread pattern optimized for both dirt and road surfaces, this shoe handles a variety of terrain thanks to a QuantumFoam midsole with just the right amount of firmness that strikes a balance between comfort, responsiveness, and durability. The outsole is made of highly durable "KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN rubber," which helps prevent lug wear. Like the "Seek," it features a 6mm heel-to-toe drop and a wide forefoot design, ensuring comfort whether you're in the mountains or the city.

Both models are designed to make running in the mountains a joy, making them perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a refreshing run in the great outdoors. An event called “Run for the Trails POP UP,” where visitors could experience the comfort of these shoes firsthand, was held in Kamakura from Friday, March 20, to Sunday, March 22. Based at “WITH KAMAKURA,” a complex housing cafes and galleries, participants ran about 5 km along a hiking trail while wearing the “Seek” and “Rome” models.

Passing through the bustling streets filled with tourists, we head to the entrance of the hiking trail. While many people might think of the ocean when they think of Kamakura’s natural scenery, there are also low mountains right next to the city that are easy to climb, making Kamakura a great place to enjoy trail running on a daily basis.

Although it’s a low mountain at an elevation of about 100 meters, the course features some solid ups and downs, making it a rewarding run.

The "Seek" features a pre-molded TPU heel counter and a lockdown knit fit construction that securely holds your foot in place, supporting quick movements on the trail.

Thanks to its QuantumFoam midsole, the "Rome" delivers comfort, cushioning, and a secure fit whether you're running on asphalt or mountain trails. The outsole features an abrasion-resistant heel strike zone for enhanced durability. Like the "Seek," this is a pair you can enjoy for years, having demonstrated a durability rating of over 925 miles (approx. 1,500 km) in Heeluxe testing.

In the early stages, participants enjoyed the ride feel of the "Seek" and "Roam" at a brisk pace. Although some sections of the trail were wet from the rain, both models provided solid grip, so there was no worry about slipping even when landing on rocks.

Incidentally, Keen has been committed to creating shoes that don’t harm the environment since its founding, and the “Seek” and “Rome” models are no exception—another key point is their use of eco-friendly materials. They bond the upper and sole with highly durable water-based adhesives to avoid the use of harmful chemicals, and incorporate the “Eco Anti-Odor” deodorizing function, which utilizes naturally derived probiotics. With a durability rating of over 925 miles, the fact that these shoes can be worn for a long time also makes them environmentally friendly.

Once we arrive at the scenic plaza, let’s take a short break. Enjoy the view that’s unique to Kamakura, where the mountains and the sea are so close together. Kamakura’s hiking trails are highly recommended because they feature spots with ocean views, making it easy to appreciate the changing scenery.

After finishing the trail run, I head back to "WITH KAMAKURA" via the road. The "Rome," designed to handle any type of terrain, is the perfect shoe for those who run on roads during the week and enjoy trail running on weekends.

The comfort the runners experienced.

We decided to ask participants who tried on the “Seek” and “Rome” models how they felt. First up are comments from Rintaro, who wore the latest “Rome” model.

Rintaro (Model)

Rintaro: I really like the cushioning of the "Rome." It felt stable when I landed, which made it easy to run in. I mostly run on roads, but I switch to trails when I want to get in shape, so I think the "Rome," which handles a variety of surfaces, is a good fit for me.

Rintaro: I’ve tried a lot of trail running shoes, but these are the most comfortable ones I’ve ever worn. The strap that secures the laces is a really smart feature, too. It’s so frustrating when your laces come undone while you’re running.

Rintaro: When choosing shoes, I usually prioritize color and design, and I used to wear bright colors a lot, but I really like this beige shade too. I’d like to wear them every day, even on days when I’m not running.

We’ll also hear from Shoutakurin, who is wearing “Seek,” and Takegyoso, who is wearing “Rome.”

Shoutakurin: This was my first time trail running. I was a little worried because my knees aren’t in the best shape, but maybe because the “Seek” has such great cushioning, my knees didn’t hurt at all. I didn’t slip once, and I really enjoyed the trail run.

Takeo Chu: I’ve competed in trail running races a few times. My usual trail running shoes tend to rub against my big toe and cause pain, but the “Rome” has a wider toe box, so I felt like my toes were properly protected, which made it easier to run.

Shoutakurin: The "Seek" model, with its knit upper, also features a knit collar, which provided a great fit around the ankle.

Takeaki: The upper of the "Rohm" is made of mesh, so I could really feel how breathable it was. Plus, it was super light. And the design is cute, too.

Shotakurin: That’s right. Both the “Seek” and the “Rome” come in a wide range of colors, including some really cute shades, so they really lift your spirits when you’re out running. I tried trail running for the first time this time around and really got a taste of how much fun it is, so I’m thinking of inviting some friends to go run in the mountains.
