TWO SPACES" is a solo exhibition by B-BOY sculptor, Takaoka Obata. It will be held simultaneously at two venues, Gap and Sculpture Center Tokyo.

Artist Taku Obata explores the fusion of breakdancing culture and contemporary art from multiple perspectives, drawing on his physical sensibilities as a B-BOY.

"TWO SPACES," a solo exhibition by Mr. Obata that materializes fleeting moments of the body caught between movement and stillness and transforms invisible energies such as gravity and rhythm into geometric and organic forms, will be held from Saturday, May 23, through Sunday, May 31.

As the title of the solo exhibition, “TWO SPACES,” suggests, “Gapand "Sculpture Center TokyoThis exhibition will be held simultaneously at two venues: "..." and "..."

Positioned as an extension of Mr. Obata’s “Transfer of Quantity” series, this technique—in which he moves back and forth between two canvases as if dancing, transferring mass from one to the other, and creating a pair of negative and positive images through a single physical act—highlights not only the trajectory of movement but also the presence and absence of the body.

Furthermore, this exhibition highlights the unique structural details of both venues through a series of works.

In “Gap,” glass windows are transformed into physical canvases, presenting a glimpse of an unfinished sculpture being exhibited for the first time. A series of photographs taken specifically for this exhibition captures fragments of the two spaces, creating a physical resonance between them.

On the occasion of his solo exhibition, Mr. Obata had this to say.

My artistic expression, which began with translating the “movements” of breakdancing into figurative wood sculptures, has consistently been grounded in “sculptural thinking” as it has expanded into the realms of drawing, canvas, photography, and video.
My upcoming solo exhibition, “TWO SPACES,” will be held simultaneously at two locations: a vacant lot in Kuramae and Sculpture Center Tokyo in Higashi-Nippori. These two spaces will interact to present new photographic works that can only exist in this unique setting. This idea emerged as a contrast to my “Transfer of Quantity” series, in which I have been painting two canvases simultaneously.
Centered around this photographic work, we will also be exhibiting two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces.
Since this is a very experimental endeavor, even I’m not sure how it will turn out, but I encourage you to actually move back and forth between the two galleries and experience the two spaces for yourself as you navigate the space.
