Vivian Sassen’s first solo exhibition in Japan in two years is now on view. Experience a visual journey unlike anything you can find on a smartphone at The Mass.

A rare photographer who, while working on campaigns for renowned luxury brands, is also highly acclaimed in the art world. That is,Vivian SassenIt is.

Her first solo exhibition in Japan in two years, titled “Myriads,” will open this weekend, on Saturday, September 5, at “The Mass” in Omotesando.

Fashion photography and fine art. The fact that both are accepted as “Vivian Sassen’s work” stems from her unique stance that commerce and art are “not opposing forces, but a continuous spectrum of expression.”

Her unique sense of color, rooted in her childhood experiences in Africa, and the geometric beauty created by the interplay of light and shadow. Sassen’s distinctive visual language, which she has firmly established, runs consistently through all her work, regardless of the medium.

This edition of “Myriads” features previously unseen works making their Japanese debut, as well as pieces from the ongoing “Frau Holle” series. As the title—meaning “countless”—suggests, the exhibition is curated to allow visitors to experience a glimpse of the multi-layered imagery she explores through the juxtaposition of multiple works.

And seeing large-format prints with your own eyes is the greatest joy of a photography exhibition. The vivid primary colors, the depth of the shadows, and the lifelike textures of skin and nature are all part of a photographic experience that can only be fully appreciated through prints.
