Nike Adapt BB ￥37,800 in TAX
By nature, providing a proper fit for the foot in sports shoes is complex and requires individualized attention. In the case of basketball, for example, during the course of a game, the foot may expand by half a size (about one size in Japanese sizes) due to the motion of play. This often means that a fit that feels comfortable at one point may feel tight just 24 minutes later.
So, Nike (NIKE) has created the Nike Adapt, a platform that provides a truly custom fit for all basketball players, combining an advanced power lacing system, an app, and continuously updated firmware. The Nike Adapt BB, which offers a customized fit, is now available.
Here's how it works. When the player places his or her foot inside the Nike Adapt BB, a dedicated motor and gear senses the pressure required by the foot and starts adjusting to maintain a snug fit. The lacing under the foot is strong enough to pull with 32 pounds of force (about the same as a standard parachute cord) to keep the foot firmly stabilized in the shoe during various movements.
And this is where the Fit Adapt technology, the brain of the shoe, comes into play. Either through hand control of the shoe or through a smartphone app, players can set the fit according to the phase of the game. For example, during a timeout, the shoes can be loosened until the game resumes. A feature will also be added that will allow players to set different degrees of tightness for warm-ups. In addition, the user will be able to receive firmware updates for the Fit Adapt technology that will be offered in the future to improve the accuracy of the fit and to receive new digital services that will be rolled out in the future.
It can also be adjusted by an app on your smartphone or by pressing a button.
The outer black shell is a high-strength flyknit, while the inner white shell is a quad-fit mesh that wraps snugly around the foot during repetitive cutting movements.
Cushlon foam in the midsole provides support and comfort from underneath the foot.
But it's not enough if it isn't recognized by players at the highest levels of the sport. That's why Nike's design team brought elite professional athletes, including Boston Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum, to Nike's headquarters in Oregon to try out the shoes for extended periods of time during workouts and pickup games.
