【FOCUS IT.] Sheep Literature playing a session with Isetan Shinjuku. Contact with culture seen from behind the scenes of online live.

It was past midnight. The sound of the ensemble echoed through the quiet Isetan store, as if leaving behind the heat that clung to the skin, the light rain that sprinkled on the floor, and the cares of this world.

The sound was led by the three-piece band Hitsujibungaku. Behind the scenes of the online live performance commemorating the new fashion event "Hitsujibungaku presents ◯△□□" being held on the 2nd floor of the Isetan Shinjuku main store, there was a mysterious atmosphere like a "secret base.

. music that filled the silent Isetan.

This event brought together brands and artists from fashion, art, lifestyle, and other fields that had never before crossed paths to form a "secret base" centered on Hitsujibungaku. How did it all begin?

Moeka Shiotsuka (Shiotsuka): It all started at the "malamute" exhibition. Hitsujibungaku always makes costumes for us, and all the staff members went there to select fabrics for the costumes. At that time, I met a buyer from Isetan, who had heard our music before and asked me to do something together with him.

Yurika Kawanishi (Kawanishi): Yes, it was. It was last fall or when it was still a little hot.

Shiotsuka: From there, based on the plan proposed by Isetan, it became an event that we could do with people who are involved with us and people we like.

Kawanishi: But it's not like the three of us discussed it alone.

Shiotsuka: Yes, the three of us don't talk to each other alone (laughs). (Laughs.) "Who wants to talk to me?" (laughs).

This project started at their own pace and in their own steps. For them, "Isetan" was a "special place.

Shiotsuka: Was it an coming-of-age ceremony , or a graduation ceremony? I think it was when I was hatachi, and I came here with my mother when I wore hakama (traditional Japanese male dress). At the time, I thought of it as a place for adults to come. After that, I would go when a brand I liked had a pop-up, or when I had a "special occasion" to visit. But since we decided to hold our own event this time, it has become a very familiar place for us.

Hiroa Fukuda (Fukuda): I really like "Keisuke Kanda. I have a variety of clothes such as mod coats and cardigans, and I have also liked Inio Asano since I was a high school student, so I once came here for a collaboration event. . And since they have a lot of brands I like, it was a place I was deeply attached to.

Kawanishi: It is a strange feeling to have our store inside such an Isetan. When I saw it for the first time, I was happy to think, "It's a proper store! I was so happy. It is a store, of course (laughs).

Shiotsuka: He has designed our graphics and website,Seri TanakaThere is also a large graphic in the DJ booth with aKataoka (Ryosuke)I was also impressed by the cute illustrations of the items that had actually been made for me.

Just before the online live performance, Shiotsuka muttered, "I don't think I will ever speak so loudly in Isetan again in my life. Isetan was empty and quiet after closing. How did he feel about performing in such a completely different environment?

Kawanishi: It was simply a lot of fun. I thought it was like a festival, the way everyone was preparing until late at night.

Fukuda: I never thought that the day would come when I would be able to perform inside Isetan. I was happy and honored. It was a strange and unusual sight, and I have many fond memories of it.

Shiotsuka: I had fun, too, although I was a little sleepy (laughs). It was late at night when the show started, and it was a festival atmosphere because it was the first time for me to be inside Isetan. Entering Isetan after the store had closed was also a rare experience, and getting lost in the backyard was also a good memory (laughs).

Kawanishi: It was like a maze, you couldn't get out because the doors wouldn't open . It was interesting to include that (laughs).

Shiotsuka: In a normal live performance, especially in a distribution live, my body gets cold and stiff due to nervousness. However, the festive atmosphere and the late-night tension got a strange adrenaline rush, and I had a strange sensation that the hand holding the guitar was not my own hand.

Kawanishi: Oh , indeed! My body was kind of flustered. I always feel nervous when I deliver, but this time I felt different. It's not that I was relaxed, but I was just having fun.

A new image of Hitsujibungaku literature from multiple perspectives.

As the three participants described it, the live streaming concert felt like a dreamlike floating sensation. It was a space like a "secret base" that did not belong anywhere in the world. The 15 brands and artists who responded to Hitsujibungaku's music. Some had been in contact with each other for a long time, while others had a one-sided love for each other. Next to the collaborative goods, each brand and artist wrote what image they had of Hitsujibungaku, which was a new discovery for the girls themselves.

Kawanishi: Everyone created the theme of "Hitsujibungaku" (sheep literature), and it was very interesting to see how colorful some of them were and how black and white others were.

Shiotsuka: Indeed!

Kawanishi: It's strange, isn't it? So I would like you to see that, too.

Fukuda: We hope that people who listen to our music as well as people who are not familiar with Hitsujibungaku will enjoy the event, since it brings together people from various genres. I hope it will be an opportunity for people to encounter new things, such as clothes and sweets.

Shiotsuka: I had not expected that everyone would enjoy making collaborative goods so much, so I was very moved. I heard that Ozaki and Kataoka, the designers of BELPER, both said that their image of Hitsujibungaku was "Henri Matisse," and I was surprised that they thought so. I myself liked Matisse, so I was happy, but I felt like I was raising the bar (laughs).

This event was a space where sessions with these various cultures were expressed. Mr. Shiotsuka says that these various cultures are indispensable to his activities.

Shiotsuka: I have never written a song about a specific fashion or art, but I write songs based on everyday events and feelings. My mood changes completely depending on the clothes I wear, so when I write songs, I wear fancy clothes in my room. I like museums and exhibitions, so I often visit them. So, they are indispensable.

Kawanishi: Maybe I get inspiration for creating visuals such as costumes and music videos.

Shiotsuka: Indeed, fashion and art may have a big influence.

Kawanishi: I would be happy if we could do many things through music in the future. In the past, didn't you talk about wanting to do a live concert at a movie theater after a screening?

Shiotsuka: Did we talk about that? (laughs) But it sounds fun! Also, I'd like to play in a fashion show or something.

Kawanishi: Ah , that's good.

Shiotsuka: I would like to do it in a museum or something. . There are many more things we would like to do. . First of all, I would like people to get to know us through this event.

It is a space full of affectionate feelings, an event where we can encounter new aspects of Hitsujibungaku literature, new interpretations of the songs, and encounters with the unknown. . three different forms of 0, △, △, and □ that seem to fill the empty space in our hearts. It seemed as if they were gently telling us that the quiet night would return.
