The sneaker brand "Thirty-Three (33)" was born in the 2016-'17 fall/winter season. The brand is characterized by a design that falls somewhere between a sneaker and a leather shoe. As the concept of the brand is "beautiful shoes," all materials, including leather and soles, are imported directly from Italy, and are also used by luxury brands. In addition to their classy appearance, these sneakers are comfortable to wear. The design team of Hiroshima-based shoe manufacturer Spingle Company, which makes these sneakers, talked about their thoughts behind their creations.

-Currently, sneakers of various tastes are being released, mainly by major sports brands. How did you get started with "Thirty-Three" at this time?

This is how it all started. I wish I had a pair of sneakers that I could wear every day. I like classic leather shoes, but they are too heavy to wear every day. However, I don't feel comfortable just wearing sports sneakers on a daily basis. That's how I felt ...... when there are so many options for shoes.

That is why they look good across generations, whether you are in your 20s or 50s, and can be worn in any situation. We felt the need for such shoes, and had been envisioning this brand for some time. However, it was not a shoe that could be easily created with just a concept, so we were looking for the right timing to fulfill all the conditions. Those conditions are ideal materials and human resources.

One of the materials used is leather for the upper. There are many great leathers in the world, but to achieve the quality and performance we were looking for, we needed to import directly from Europe.

One of our human resources is a dyer (patina) who does the coloring. It took time to develop the production technology with creation that we seek in our own factory in Japan. It is not enough to just have a high level of technology. We must have the same values. We are still in the process of growth and look forward to further improvement and innovation. All other conditions were met and the brand was finally launched in 2016.

What is the meaning behind the brand name "thirty-three"?

Founded in 1933. Our parent company, Nichiman Co.,Ltd. has a long history. That is why we cited the number "33," the year of our founding, as a statement of our intention for the new generation to continue to advance further into the future.

Also, the numbers and the arrow symbols in the list have meaning. There are ( people and ) thoughts of the makers, ( goods and ) products, and then ( experiences and ) things. This is the flow of modern consumption. We do the entire process ourselves, from creation, production, to getting the product into the hands of the consumer. With this in mind, we have made our brand icon, which resembles a series of arrows, a symbol of the trinity that we are advancing.

-I think that "THIRTY THREE" is particularly particular about the colors of its shoes. How did you decide on the six colors for this year's collection?

All four colors we are dyeing are based on the concept of shades that are visually inspired by natural objects. Beige is "ANTIQUE TAN." This is the look of solid material changing over time to a tan color. Navy is "DEEP SEA. A gradation of dark blue and jet black that changes as it progresses into deep sea. Brown is "WHISKY. Deep red like ruby aged in sherry casks. Green is "FOREST. The green of the forest has a dull bluish hue depending on the season and time of day.

The two pure, achromatic colors express opposing shades. Black maximizes the luster of the leather, giving it a fine, glossy look. The white color is a matte and pure look with no color added to the leather. As a side note, the model name is based on the scientific names of the 88 constellations.

-I have heard that your craftsmen carefully dye the colors by hand.

We do not disclose the specific process of hand-dyeing, so we will give you an example. To express the color green, our color is created by mixing not only green dyes but also blue, yellow, and many other colors. For the formulation and development of the color, we have received technical cooperation from Columbus, a long-established shoe cream company founded in 1919. In addition, we use "BOOT BLACK" series shoe cream, which is considered to be one of the highest quality products of Columbus, in the final process.

-In addition to the basic front lace type, we also have unique side lace and slip-on types. What points did you focus on in the shoe molds?

We value the hybrid balance created by crossing dress, mode, and sport elements. The "ORION" has a classic outer wing nose that is made to look as long as possible, creating a sense of consistency and discomfort. VOLANS" has ergonomically designed side laces for a high fitting yet sexy finish. The "LEO" offers an elegant contrast between the active material neoprene and the relative patina.

-There are many shoe manufacturers and workshops in Italy. You use materials and techniques from renowned companies for the leather upper, sole, and manufacturing process, but is there any reason why you insist on Italy?

This time, by coincidence, everything that met the ideal requirements for both the leather upper and sole was in Italy. The leather is by INCAS and the sole is by GOMMUS. We were able to provide the same quality that is used by the luxury brands that everyone is familiar with. Since we import everything directly from Italy, we were able to achieve high added value with cost performance that is unimaginable elsewhere. We will continue to gather the best materials from around the world and produce them at our own factory in Japan.

I have actually tried on a pair of "Thirty-Three" shoes, and they are very unique and comfortable.

Although they have the hard look of leather shoes on the outside, when you actually put your feet into them, they are as gentle and comfortable as if you were walking on a cushion. For this SEASON-1 collection, we have achieved a surprisingly comfortable fit by combining two types of originally developed insoles.
