I heard that the two of you met once when you performed on the same stage at "Coachella 2024".
LANA: Yes, I feel like I am speaking almost for the first time this time. But anyway, it was fun!
Ikuta: I am the same way! I had such a good time talking to you and we never ran out of topics to talk about.
After the recording, did your impressions of each other change?
LANA: Rira-chan has an image of being elegant and demure (laughs). (Laughs.) But at your live performances, you are quite agitating the audience, aren't you?
Ikuta: Come and get me!" (laughs).
LANA: Yes, yes! I knew that too, so I guess I don't have much of an impression of you after talking to you. It's just the way I imagined it.
Ikuta: I often watch live videos of LANA, and I knew she was very agitated, so when I talked to her, I found her tone of voice to be very soft, which was a new discovery for me. That made me happy.
During the recording, I got the sense that we were getting to know each other better and better.
LANA: It was really like that, and I was happy too.
As you mentioned in the talk, you appeared as ikura of YOASOBI at "Coachella 2024" and Ikuta-san gave LANA-san his own CD, which is how you first met.
Ikuta: I love LANA's music and was listening to it a lot during that period. When I found out that we were going to perform on the same stage, I decided that I would definitely talk to her.
What attracted you to LANA?
Ikuta: She had a really great voice, and I became interested in listening to her. She was only 20 years old at the time, but her choice of words was energetic and her voice was powerful, as if she was not afraid of anything. When I learned about LANA's life up to that point, I felt a great depth to her. The deeper I dug, the more I liked her. When I met her for the first time, I told her straight out that I liked her.
LANA: I'm so happy. I've seen you live at Coachella and listened to your songs. From my point of view, you are already above the clouds, and when you approached me, I said, "What? You listen to my music? I was a little panicked (laughs). But I was really happy.
Ikuta: Ehhh..! I'm kind of glad too (laughs).
LANA: I like the lyrics you write. It is difficult to express in words, but I really feel something.
You both have different approaches to musical expression, but do you share any common ground?
LANA: As we talked about in the recording, I think it's the environment. I have loved singing since I was a child, and I have been doing it ever since I was a child. That's why I think we feel the same, even though our genres are different.
Ikuta: The soul part is kind of the same.
LANA: Yes, yes!
Ikuta: That is why I did not feel that way at all, even though we had almost never met before. When I heard the song "HERE," I was amazed at how nakedly you sublimate your good and bad points in your music. You expose your heart and soul. When he sings, he is not too cool in a good way, and I was struck by the way he says, "This is me as I am right now. I also think that I have to be careful to show the unpretentious side of myself. I am conscious of this in my performances and when I write lyrics, so there is a link between the two.
LANA: I want to go see Rira-chan live. I want to feel it.
Ikuta: By all means!
Do you go to a lot of gigs?
LANA: Recently, I have started to perform on larger stages as a one-man show, and I try to go as if I am studying to absorb various things. I have never been the type of person who goes to see a show. I listen to music at home or go dancing at a club, but I never used to take the time to go see an artist perform live, so I feel like I am a magician. I have not been going to see artists live for a long time, so I really want to feel the music.
