Interview with Kiyo Kurosaki and Kenichi Endo for the film "Miharashi Generation.
The human drama swirling in the "small society" of the family.

Miharashi Generation" is the first feature film with an original screenplay by director Yuga Danzuka, who was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival as the youngest Japanese director at the age of 26. The film depicts the universal theme of family problems in a light-hearted, albeit heavy-hearted, manner, and questions each person's view of life and family. We interviewed Kiyo Kurosaki and Kenichi Endo, who play parents and children with difficult relationships in this film, about the film, the director, and their own ways of dealing with people.

A young man, Ren, works as a delivery driver of orchids in Shibuya, Tokyo, where redevelopment is underway. One day, he meets his father, a landscape designer, for the first time in several years. He tells his sister, Emi, about it, but she seems unconcerned and says, "I don't care about the past anymore," and quietly proceeds to make preparations for their marriage. Father has never changed since before mother's death. He spends all his time working, as if turning his back on his family. Ren, who spends her days agonizing over her family's problems, tries to re-measure the distance between the family once again. As he gazes at the ever-changing cityscape, the family's last night together begins.

A story of family rebirth based on the director's own experiences.

-What were your impressions when you read the script?

Kurosaki: When I saw Director Danzuka's short film "I want to go far away" in 2021, I found it interesting in a way that the written word cannot. And when I first read the script for "Miharashi Generation," I remember being very excited to read it, thinking that it was going to be even more interesting than I had imagined.

-How does it feel to play the lead role for the first time?

Kurosaki: First of all, I am extremely grateful. In particular, this film is a story that focuses on family, and I believe that Ren just happened to be the featured character, so I was able to play the role without putting too much effort into it just because I was the lead actor. I was able to play a flat role without putting too much effort into it just because I was the lead.

-I have heard that Director Danzuka is an essential part of Mr. Kurosaki's life as an actor.

Kurosaki: Goodbye." I made my debut in a film called "Hoyaman," and the director was in the making of the film. The director was in the making of the film. He was there watching me perform for the first time. Since we were of the same generation, we became friends. So I was happy that he gave the role to me, a "friend.

Endo: He was the youngest director I had ever worked with in my acting career, but he was very perceptive. He was the youngest director I had ever worked with in my life as an actor, but he was "perceptive." So I felt at ease and let the director do whatever he asked me to do! I approached the role with this in mind.

Kurosaki: I felt at ease. Rather than having specific instructions, we were able to catch each other up in a casual conversation, like "in a certain way," which made it easy for me to work on the role. It was like having dinner with the director, and I didn't try to make up the role.

-This was your first time working together. What was your impression of each other?

Endo: Well, anyway, I can only say one word: amazing. It is a miracle that he is able to express his emotions so well. In my third year, I was so nervous that I was so stiff on stage, and people used to imitate my movements (laughs).

Kurosaki: I was grateful that Mr. Endo made me laugh like this on the set and created a very friendly atmosphere.

-I was surprised at how impressive Mr. Kurosaki's voice was in the film. When he uttered his first words, the atmosphere changed completely, and I had a feeling that the story would progress rapidly from there. Are you conscious of the expression of your voice?

Kurosaki: I often receive compliments, but I was concerned that my voice was difficult to carry, so I took voice training for about a year, and now I finally feel like this.

Endo: Was it low before the voice change?

Kurosaki: That's right. Ever since I was in elementary school, people told me I had a low voice. I am still training for the stage, but it is difficult to express my voice. Ren didn't have many lines this time, and the roles I've played in the past didn't have many lines, so I'll be very nervous if I get a role with many lines in the future.

-I think that the film depicts a parent and child who are distant from each other.

Kurosaki: The character I played, Ren, has a desire to restore her relationship with her father, and she has always wanted to make some kind of change in her family problems. It may seem as if she is angry with her father, but she is not resentful of him, and in fact, she is lonely. But her sister is very indifferent to family problems, and there is a clear difference in temperature.

Endo: From the first half of the story, I was conscious of the relationship between family members, but not too close. There is a sense of distance between me and my wife and the children.

Kurosaki: When I saw Mr. Endo playing the role of the father, I played the role with the loneliness I carried in my heart.

-Did the two of you have a mutual understanding of the exquisite distance between the two of you?

Endo: There is nothing like that at all. Rather, Kurosaki-kun laughed so hard in the first scene where the father and son meet that he had to give two or three NGs (laughs).

Kurosaki: Right before the scene where we meet, I saw a TikTok video of Mr. Endo dancing with a high school girl. Then Endo-san came in from the other side with a serious look on his face, greeted me, and when we started shooting, I burst out laughing. So I honestly told him that I had just watched Endo-san's TikTok (laughs).

Endo: It's really a guerrilla (laughs). It's a serious work, but the scene was surprisingly friendly.

The film dealt with a theme that tends to be heavy - family problems - but I felt that there were many ways to prevent the film from becoming too heavy. Are there any scenes that left a strong impression on you two?

Kurosaki: It is a scene where he is lifting a ball in the park by himself. The ball bounces lightly, creating a rhythm to the story. I practiced lifting for this scene, and I was doing really well in practice, but I couldn't do it at all during the actual performance. I was embarrassed by that, which was impressive (laughs).

-How about you, Mr. Endo?

Endo: I know I am talking about the film as a whole, but first of all, I was surprised by the way the director shot the film. It is not a cut-and-paste job that just anyone can do, and I think that movie lovers will be surprised by the beauty and novelty of the images. He is still in his 20s, so he is a young filmmaker, but not all young filmmakers can do this, so I feel that he has the power that he "has.
