Ask a travel expert about the right way to spend your vacation.

It is said that Japanese people are not good at taking vacations compared to people from other countries. What should we do to relieve our daily fatigue and energize ourselves for tomorrow? We asked Xavier Desalle, CEO of the Southeast Asia Pacific region of Club Med, a company that enjoys a strong following among travelers and resort lovers, and an active traveler himself, about the right way to spend a vacation.

Xavier Desalle.

He is the CEO of the Southeast Asia Pacific region for Club Med, which has about 70 locations worldwide. Club Med is an "all-inclusive resort" where all meals, drinks, sports lessons, etc. are included in the price of the trip. Travelers can enjoy a truly relaxing vacation without the hassle of complicated procedures and tedious arrangements.

Vacations are not just an escape from everyday life .

Xavier, you have traveled all over the world in the course of your work.

Xavier.. for me, there are two purposes of travel. . one is to discover new destinations that I have never visited before. . The second is to discover a new part of myself that I did not even know existed before.

For those of you who are busy in your daily lives, a vacation may be an escape from your daily routine. However, I believe that a vacation is not just an escape, but also a way to make new connections with the land, the environment, and the people who live there.

Are there any things you keep in mind when you are on vacation to make your stay comfortable?

Xavier.. I try to get a good night's sleep. I try to sleep a lot during my stay and also on the plane while traveling. It is easy to get drunk up in the air, so don't drink too much before boarding and during the flight (laughs).

Are there any places you haven't visited yet that you would like to visit in the future?

Xavier.. there are many, but if I had to name one, it would be Bhutan. Bhutan is one of the few places in the world where the things that are important to humans have remained unchanged since ancient times. I would like to visit there someday.

We offer "unique experiences" during your vacation.

When you go on vacation, what do you look for in a vacation plan?

I gather information from blogs and social networking sites of acquaintances and friends, discuss it with my family, and then decide on a destination. In deciding on a destination, I place importance on surprises and safety. These two things are especially important.

Xavier.. also, I have 3 children, and when choosing a vacation destination, I value what I can experience there more than where we go. How do the people there live, what do they eat, what do they do for fun? We research these things well in advance. We want the children to have experiences that they can only have there.

What is the most memorable place you have visited on vacation so far?

Xavier.. I can't list them all, but to name just two, the first was a campervan trip with my children in Western Australia. . It was an unforgettable trip.

The second is Sahoro, Hokkaido, which I visited last year for skiing. I was born in Switzerland and have enjoyed skiing since childhood, and I have visited more than 10 countries for skiing in the past, but the snow quality in Sahoro was one of the best I have ever experienced. The snow is light and dry , and there is plenty of snowfall. My wife and kids love to ski and it was a great family experience.
