Interview on the occasion of the opening of the movie "Grandpa, I'm Dead." An interview with Yukino Kishii and Kengo Kakudate on the occasion of the film's release. Yukino Kishii and Kengo Kakudate talk about family and expression.
The movie "Grandpa, I'm Dead" will open in theaters on Saturday, November 4. will be released on Saturday, November 4. What emerged from the interview with Yukino Kishii, who plays the lead role, and Kengo Kakudate of Yogee New Waves, who sings the theme song, was the emotional landscape of people living in the world of expression. The interview also includes photos taken on the set of the music video for Yogee New Waves' "SAYONARAMATA," which was created to take over the film's worldview.
story A summer in a local city. Yoshiko Haruno interrupts sex with her boyfriend to pick up the phone, which rings continuously, to find that her grandfather has died. From upstairs, she calls out to her father, "Grandpa, he died.
Kishii Yukino Actress, born in 1992. In her first leading role, she plays Yoshiko Haruno.
Kengo Kakudate Vo./Gt. of Yogee New Waves. Born in 1991. First time to sing the theme song as a band.
I have very little memory of my life up to the age of 20.
Did you know each other before you started working on the film?
bank (of a river)Yes, I did. The first time I met you was at a concert I went to through a mutual friend. I saw Kengo play and I thought, "There is no one else like him! I was shocked.
corner houseIt's kind of embarrassing (laughs).
Please tell me why you feel that way.
bank (of a river)I don't know why. I thought he was kind, warm, and very human. The first time I saw him was as a person on stage, so I was nervous when I talked to him a little after the concert (laughs).
Conversely, what is your impression of Mr. Kishii from your point of view?
residence of a daimyo's successorShe's cute, and I couldn't talk to her casually either. Because she is an actress, you know? It's hard to get close to her.
It's a strange thought, since we are both in a public position and are the same age.
residence of a daimyo's successorI went to a boys' school all my life, so it's hard for me to escape the karma of being from a boys' school. I grew up with male siblings, and when I hear the word "actress," I freeze up (laughs).
I see. Since we are close in age, I feel that we can share such unimportant things as TV shows we used to watch and so on. Do you have any memorable programs?
bank (of a river)I have very little memory of my life up to the age of 20.
residence of a daimyo's successorWell, what does that mean?
bank (of a river)I didn't fit in very well in high school, and all three years I tried to think only about the future. What am I going to do after graduation? I went to Yokohama at the age of 18 to apply to a vocational school, and I was scouted there, and from then on, I think a new life began.
In the end, the straight and narrow will be saved. That is what I believe and that is why I do music.
I think it is a heavy story, but you talk about it without hesitation.
bank (of a river)I'm not dragging it out at all!
residence of a daimyo's successorIf you are enjoying it now, that's the best.
bank (of a river)It's only been about five years since my new life began, so every day is fresh (laughs).
Are you into acting now?
bank (of a river)Yes, I have. But ever since I started acting, I have often wondered, "Who is going to watch me? I often felt insecure. However, being given the opportunity to play the lead in this movie has allowed me to peel off one layer of my skin. I think the fact that I was able to be in the center of the film as the lead actor was a big part of it.
You have changed your mindset as an actress.
bank (of a river)I was conscious of creating the atmosphere of the scene with myself playing the central role. If I didn't have confidence in my leading role, the film itself would lose its persuasive power. It was important for me to feel that I could do things freely and honestly! That was a big part of the film. Another reason was that the film's production team, including director Morigaki, was so wonderful.
residence of a daimyo's successorI had seen them in music videos and dramas, but I felt like my impression of them changed a lot this time around.
Grandpa, I'm Dead" is a film that seems light at first glance, but deals with a very heavy subject matter. The film "Grandpa Died" is a seemingly light-hearted film that deals with a very heavy subject matter. Family, rural society, nursing care, and death. I thought the song "Sayonaramata" by Yogee New Waves was a great fit for this.
residence of a daimyo's successorI believe that in film and in expression, there has to be some poison somewhere. This film has that kind of depth, which is good. It doesn't just end with a happy ending, but it leaves an indigestible feeling.
I have the impression that both Kakudate and Kishii interpret "darkness" in a positive way.
residence of a daimyo's successorYes, I agree. There was a time when I looked at darkness, but now I believe that love is the most important thing. Being straight should properly benefit us in the end. In a short term, though, you may lose some money. In the end, the one who stays straight will be saved. That is what I believe and that is why I do music.
I feel this from the recent music of Yogee New Waves. Mr. Kishii, you are often described as a good actor. I would like to know what it feels like to act from the inside.
residence of a daimyo's successorI'm very interested. I'd like to hear it.
bank (of a river)The technical part is still in its infancy. For example, there are many aspects that I cannot fully calculate, such as how this kind of behavior will be seen or conveyed. However, I think a lot about borrowing another person's personality. For example, I don't say things that Yoshiko wouldn't say, and I think about what Yoshiko would do. My mind may go deeper into it.
residence of a daimyo's successorEven in live performances, I am conscious of "how to show it," but I am the main subject, so it seems to be very difficult to get into other people's personalities.
I don't really understand the kind of relationship that is ruined when others are not nearby.
I think "family," which is the key word in this film, is a very different form for each person, but please tell us about "family" for you two.
residence of a daimyo's successorI love mothers anyway. I think the first person a man protects is his mother. My parents divorced when I was very young, but I still feel affection for my father when I see him and talk to him. It was very complicated.
I understand the pain of standing between parents.
residence of a daimyo's successorThere are situations like that. This is a role only I can play, I'm the right person for the job. I thought, "This is a role that only I can play. But I also cried to my girlfriend, "It's so hard! (laughs).
bank (of a river)I have always tried to be a good girl. My parents would consider me a good girl. Even though we were close to each other as a family, we were a family that regarded each of us as individuals.
Where did you go abroad?
bank (of a river)I saved up about 250,000 yen to go to France, working part-time for 800 yen an hour....
residence of a daimyo's successorEh! Amazing!
bank (of a river)So I'm not sure if I'm independent in a sense, or if I don't understand the kind of relationship that is ruined if others are not nearby.
Do you solve all the sad or tough times by yourself?
bank (of a river)I write everything down in my notebook (laughs).
residence of a daimyo's successorI want to see it so badly.
bank (of a river)Absolutely not (laughs).
Finally, what is your favorite scene or highlight in the film?
bank (of a river)The breakfast scene. It was about two weeks after I first met my co-stars, and at that moment, I felt like we had become a family.
residence of a daimyo's successorI think it is the part where Kaoru, played by Miki Mizuno, appears in a Ferrari. She is a person who lives in the city, which is relatively close to my own life as a Tokyo native, and I could relate to her in many ways. She is strong, but also emotionally rich.
Thank you very much.
