THE GUIDE HOW TO USE "Samsonite RED"

How to use Samsonite Red, the new urban bag. The case of stylist Shun Katagai.

There are many different bag brands, each with its own charm. Among the many bag brands, "Samsonite Red" has gained support from many quarters, both inside and outside the fashion industry. What is the reason for this? In this second half of our interview, we asked Mr. Shun Katagai, a stylist with a strong focus on men's fashion, to tell us. He also introduces some examples of fall/winter coordination that you may want to check out as well.

Rather than saying, "This bag doesn't go with this outfit," I prefer a bag that can be used with any outfit.

What is your impression of Samsonite Red?

kanji "shell" radical at leftI have an image that they can be used for daily use and are easy to match with any coordinates. There is a wide variety of materials, such as cordura nylon, canvas, and PVC coated glossy ones, and the models such as daypacks, shoulder bags, and body bags are available, so I feel they are easy to coordinate with any outfit.

Are there any details that caught your attention?

kanji "shell" radical at leftThe "Bias Metal 2" has a unique slanted front pocket and a robust metal zipper. I think the large zippers in general are a point of difference from other bag brands. The large zippers make the bags tougher to use.

Shun Katagai
Born in 1982 in Aichi Prefecture. After studying under stylist Hiroshi Ozawa, he became independent in 2009. He is a popular stylist who works mainly for men's fashion magazines, but is also active in catalogs and advertisements.

This time, we have four coordinated outfits using "Samsonite Red" bags, all of which have a nice street style!

kanji "shell" radical at leftI didn't start out with a street style in mind. When I saw a Samsonite Red bag, I felt an "urban" vibe in the shape and fabric of the bag, and I took inspiration from that and incorporated it into an active styling, like a bicycle rider.

What do you think of Samsonite Red's product design?

kanji "shell" radical at leftIt is very important that the body of the bag and the strap are the same color. For example, there are many tote bags with blue body color and different color straps. But Samsonite Red offers many bags in a single color, and even if they use two colors, they are easy to use black. Personally, I have never owned a bag with many color combinations. I usually just use a simple all-black daypack. So a bag with minimal coloring is eye-catching.

Do you think the monochromatic color is also important for styling?

kanji "shell" radical at leftThat's right. For example, the "Swing Mode 2" used in this styling is blue, but if different colors were used for the straps, there would be many colors to add to the coordination, making it difficult to match them. However, with a single color, it is not so difficult because you can add the color straight away. The red tag is a subtle accent.

The cleanness of not using unnecessary color schemes is directly related to "usability.

kanji "shell" radical at leftYes, I do. Just by having one of these bags in your wardrobe, you will not have to worry about which bag to match with your daily outfits. Samsonite Red's designs are simple, but there are many parts that are carefully selected, such as materials and parts, so I think anyone can easily adopt them. As I mentioned earlier, the bags I use in my private life are extremely simple. The same goes for my clothes; I don't have anything that makes a strong statement. I like to wear clothes and bags that are very versatile. Rather than saying, "This bag doesn't go with this outfit," I prefer a bag that can be used with any outfit. I think the Samsonite Red bag is the embodiment of this design.

Is the idea of simplicity reflected in Katagai-san's styling?

kanji "shell" radical at leftI don't think about it too much, but I naturally gravitate toward colors and designs that are easy to use. I think bags are essentially functional. They are easy to put documents in, have a sleeve to protect your computer, etc. But when you think about styling, a bag is only one plus when it comes to coordination. But when you think about styling, just one bag adds color and volume to a coordinated look. I use it in my coordination with the understanding that it is a slightly different accent from accessories such as hats and sunglasses. Samsonite Red's bags are simple, with no unnecessary decorations, so they are easy to use as accents. I think that's the secret to their popularity.

Ms. Katagai's tips on how to coordinate "Samsonite Red".

Since boa tops are trendy this year, they are a key item. Also, instead of using monotone colors, we dare to use brown to give a soft impression while creating a sense of the season. However, even though the colors are the same, the trick is to create different shades for each item to create a different contrast for a beautiful look.

The "Swing Mode 2" accentuates the outfit. The blue color goes well with the pink color of the top, and the addition of the blue color alone makes the overall atmosphere of the outfit much tighter. The rest of the items are black and gray to emphasize the two color schemes. Isn't it nice to choose such a bright color scheme in this season?

The body bag itself has a sporty feel, so I chose a brown color and matched it with collared outerwear to shift the styling to a more relaxed mood. The blue two-tuck pants give a beautiful impression, creating a crisp outfit that is not too heavy. The simplicity of the design is the key point.

The chic coloring is spiced up with neon yellow accessories. Flashy coloring can be easily blended in by using items with a small total area, such as knit caps and belts. The small, square-shaped backpack is a personal favorite.
