A conversation in commemoration of the release of "ON THE AIR"! VIDEOTAPEMUSIC and Ken Yokoyama are connected by "radio waves".

VIDEOTAPEMUSIC's new album "ON THE AIR" was released on October 25, and while retaining the traditional method of sampling from VHS, the band recorded the "sounds of the city" sometimes while walking, and sometimes while riding in a car. The feeling he got while doing so became the motif of this album. This time, VIDEOTAPEMUSIC and Ken Yokoyama of Crazy Ken Band had a talk. The two were connected through their work in video production, but in fact, they had many things in common that they had never expected. They talked about their new album, the band, and music. We asked them to talk about various topics.

I feel the sound spirit in the name of the artist, VIDEOTAPEMUSIC.

video_ckb001

VIDEOTAPEMUSIC, you are now in your 30s, right? How did you come to know the appeal of Crazy Ken Band ("CKB") and Ken Yokoyama?

VIDEOTAPEMUSIC (hereinafter referred to as VIDEO)The first time I saw you was on TV, but it was around "SOUL Radio" (2007, your 9th album) that I really got into the music. I had been a fan of exotic music by Martin Denny and others since that time, so the tiki, pan-Pacific sensibility of the cover and music of "SOUL Radio" gave me the elements I liked, and I became more and more absorbed in the music. . At that time, in parallel with my discovery of CKB, I also learned about the people of Pan Pacific Playa (PPP) in Yokohama.

side (transverse) mountainPPP!

videoWhen I went to LUVRAW&BTB and their events, CKB was often played by the DJs because of the Yokohama connection. It was good music to play at clubs, but it was also interesting to listen to it at home while reading the lyrics. At first I listened to it alone, but as I heard it at clubs and other venues, I began to share the benefits of CKB with various people, such as the members of PPP and Kojo of cero, who is of the same generation as me, and we all went to see them live, and I got more and more hooked.

Mr. Yokoyama, did you notice that the younger generation is responding to CKB?

side (transverse) mountainAt first, I heard about such a movement through Charlie Miyage, who is active in Honmoku. But we were like, "Oh, really? I was like, "Really? Charlie and I had always been good friends, talking about radio talk that other people wouldn't understand (laughs). . and here we are today.

video_ckb002_1120

video"Cinnamon feeling (a concept proposed by Charlie Miyage . . an exotic and unnerving feeling of comfort.

side (transverse) mountainYes, it is! Then Charlie said, "Nowadays young people are talking about CKB and creating that kind of worldview," so after that I was listening to LUVRAW & BTB's "Yokohama City Breeze" (2010) and cero, and then Yakehara san and so on, VIDEOTAPEMUSIC, and many other names came to my mind.

When did you actually catch the music of VIDEOTAPEMUSIC, Mr. Yokoyama?

side (transverse) mountainFirst, Mr. Takagi of cero told me about him, and at that time I thought, "Hey, I've heard that name from other people, too. I thought, "I've heard that name from other people, too," and gradually the information matched up, and I realized that he was a video artist as well. I could tell from his name how he felt about it, so even before I could find out what kind of work he did, I decided, "I'm definitely going to ask him to do a job for me! (laughs). (Laughs). When I tried a job based on my hunch, it usually turned out as I had expected. And in this case, when I asked him to do the job, he was even better than I had expected (laughs).

videoWhen I was a guest on CERO's radio show ("Night Drifter" on InterFM), Mr. Takagi was talking about me. Just before that, Yakehara and I had often talked about CKB's Honmoku guide video ("Ken Yokoyama's Honmoku Lifestyle," a bonus DVD for the 2006 CD "SOUL PUNCH"), and I actually went sightseeing in Honmoku with Yakehara. Takagi told me about that story to Ken-san.

side (transverse) mountainIn my own time, I explored Honmoku legends such as CHIBOW and the Golden Cups and their surroundings in that video, and the same thing was being done by the video artists of a different generation.

video. yes, I did. I went to the Seamen's Club , went to the Golden Cup and listened to records on the jukebox.

video_ckb003

What did you think about the artist name, VIDEOTAPEMUSIC, Yokoyama-san?

side (transverse) mountainYou have very good taste. When I was at the Ink Stick in Shibaura in 1988, I found a band called ORIGINAL LOVE and was surprised at the coolness of the name, just like I was surprised at the coolness of the name "What the hell! I was just as shocked as I was when I found a band called "ORIGINAL LOVE" when I was at Ink Stick in Shibaura in 1988 and was amazed at how cool they were. I liked the way it sounded as a word, like "Yokosuka," "Sasebo," or "Okinawa," and I felt the spirit of "Otodama" (sound spirit) and "Mojidama" (letter spirit). It's one word, and there is a spirit (dama) here.

videoWhen we handed you our first album "7 Nights 8 Days" (2012) before, you said, "I love the colors! He said, "I love the colors!

side (transverse) mountainI feel like "Cinnamon" to Charlie, "Meri-Meri" to me, or "Electric Bodhisattva" to Shintaro Katsu (laughs). (Laughs.) Moreover, when I listened to VIDEO's second album, "Nights Around the World" (2015), there is a song by Hatoya ("Miss Hatoya"), and I was surprised to hear all the songs like "How do you know how I feel! I was surprised to hear all these songs like that . There is a sense of echo, or a kind of self-serving fantasy that spreads beyond the noise, and there were many places where I thought, "That's exactly how I feel. There was a lot of deja vu, but it was the latest type of music, not nostalgic.

video_ckb004

videoFor CKB's 20th anniversary this year, I edited CKB's vast amount of past footage to create the music videos for "Luminescence! Midnight Tribe" and "Susie Wong's World" music videos (included in the DVD "20/20 Video Attack! Live at Kobe CRAZY KEN BAND TOUR 香港的士 2016"). In particular, "Luminescence! Midnight Tribe", when I listened to the song again and again and read the lyrics again, I found what I wanted to do with the music. The phrase "Inside my head is a walkie-talkie, always on a busy line" gives me the feeling that the melody is coming from behind the noise of a busy radio, and I get that kind of image from CKB's music. The title "SOUL Radio" itself is already like that, and since the production of the music video was almost simultaneous with the production of my album "ON THE AIR," the lyrics of that song also became interwoven with the album's content.

side (transverse) mountainLuminescence! Midnight Tribe" is the pattern that worked best as a song, and VIDEO picked up those parts in the video as well. It's a result of the magnetic field.

video. Videotapes also record images magnetically, you know.

video_ckb005

side (transverse) mountain. because numbness is also magnetic. I am first attracted to that rather than to the meaning. I have felt that kind of magnetism from Shintaro Sakamoto since the time he was a member of "Yubari Teikoku. So when I looked at the jacket of "ON THE AIR" this time, I felt that it clearly expresses the air of Yokosuka, Seya, and Fussa, or various things that should not be intercepted. . Palm trees and palms are nice.

videoI like the palm tree very much. It is different from the palm tree in that it has a distorted feeling, or perhaps an exotic feeling even though it is a plant that grows in Japan. You also introduced the palm tree in your Honmoku Guide DVD, didn't you, Ken?

side (transverse) mountainJust one palm tree! When I put out that video, almost no one could get through to me, but now they finally have!

videoThat's what I was receiving .

side (transverse) mountainThe first albums that gave me such an experience were Haruomi Hosono's "Taean Yoko" (1976) and "Haraiso" (1978). When I saw the jackets, I was shocked to the point that I was not just buying the jackets, but the sound was even better than the jackets.

videoThe same experience for me was "SOUL Radio".

side (transverse) mountainThank you very much!

You can go into a lot of things if you step into it , but you can also listen to it in a lighthearted way.

videoFor CKB's 20th anniversary work, I borrowed a huge amount of past library footage, and among them was a particularly old video of a live performance in Fussa. I am also very interested in the Fussa area, and "ON THE AIR" is based on the scenery of that area.

side (transverse) mountainVIDEO's new work, "Ushihama" is amazing. I was surprised (laughs). It really pushed my meridian points. The rock 'n' roll, soulful feeling that I feel around Ushihama was also expressed, and I thought, "Ah, I guess we feel the same thing. . I felt the music, or rather, I felt the noise.

videoThe noise in the air is very drifting. . It is also connected to Yokohama by Route 16.

side (transverse) mountainI think this album would also fit the feeling of the upcoming season, Route 16 near Christmas. Also, you had a song about a tropical fish shop.

. "Pontiana."

videoThere was suddenly an aloana store along a national highway with that name, and I felt a strange atmosphere there, so I took the liberty of writing a song based on my fantasy about the name of the store.

side (transverse) mountain"There it is!" I thought. . I've never been to Pontiana, but I know someone who loves tropical fish. I also feel radio waves when I see fish and other creatures that I find in illustrated books.

. It is interesting that the song titles "Ushihama" and "Pontiana" stick with Yokoyama-san as words. Focusing on the album, how did you feel about the changes in VIDEOTAPEMUSIC from the previous album "Nights Around the World" to the new album "ON THE AIR"?

video_ckb006

side (transverse) mountainThe last album had a certain "SOUVENIR" feeling, or an exotic world that comes from the word "around the world", but this time the word is "radio waves". After making an album called "SOUL RADIOT WAVE," I thought, "This is exactly what "SOUL RADIOT WAVE" deserves! I thought, "This is exactly what SOUL RADIATION WAVE deserves. On the other hand, it also has a popularity that appeals to people who don't understand such things at all, which is wonderful. It is not weak enough to be understood only by those who understand it, but has the power to penetrate through.

videoI wanted it to have a duality, so that if you go into it, you can go into a lot of things, but you can also listen to it without hesitation.

If you had to name another song that is a killer in your opinion, Yokoyama, what would it be?

side (transverse) mountainMotor Pool! I played this on my radio show. It is mainly in Kansai, isn't it, to call a parking lot this way?

video_ckb007

videoI saw one in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, too. The word "motor pool" made me think of a large parking lot of a pachinko parlor in the suburbs along the national highway from Fussa to Saitama, where cars are constantly entering and exiting, like a flowing swimming pool in the middle of summer. . There was a blues and a feeling. I felt a kind of blues and a pleasant sensation there, and I named the scene of the suburban pachinko parlor "motor pool" on my own.

Speaking of songs set in suburban parking lots, CKB also has a great song called "Motortown Suite" (2014, "Spark Plug").

video. that song was very groundbreaking for me. It was a very groundbreaking song for me. It was a very easy way to show that such a mellow scene exists even in a rather bland scene. Takagi said he also really liked that song, and we both agreed that the sound and lyrics of that song were amazing.

side (transverse) mountainI'm glad I included it in the best of the best album (laughs). The characters are rather DQN-like in the sense that they drive mini-cars and have UFO catcher prizes in their windows, but I thought it would be mellow because it overlapped with scenes from the daily lives of Chicanos in L.A. and elsewhere.

videoI like the way you portray them as if there is a story for each one of them, rather than lumping them all together under the term "mild yankee," for example, and I did "Motor Pool" to show the mellowness in the suburban landscape.

video_ckb008

side (transverse) mountainIt's all connected (laughs). Also, I like the song that NOPPAL sings ("Her Favorite Moments").

videoThis was at a festival at a U.S. military base in Fussa, and it was great to see young teenage girls making noise with Rihanna and Drake songs playing, so I field recorded it and used it for the song.

When Mr. VIDEO explains during the MC at the show that "this song was shot at a festival at a U.S. military base by a group of young girls," the audience goes wild (laughs), but when he gets into the song, it's like watching a documentary film, and then we enter a different world of music, I think that's what I really like about it.

side (transverse) mountain. you link up and go into a different world.

video. it's like tuning in to the view that other people are seeing.

side (transverse) mountainMusic is supposed to have that kind of magic or miracle in it, but I don't see that kind of feeling in the world these days. I think this work presents that kind of image.

video_ckb009

Music needs an element of fear.

I think the two of you also share the sense of "catching invisible radio waves.

side (transverse) mountainIn terms of radio waves, my first radio was a portable radio called "Skysensor 5500" when I was in the fourth or fifth grade of elementary school. I was first struck by the feeling of something beyond the sound, and I thought it was lovely. Also, when you drop the needle on a record, there is a distant sound just before the sound starts. That kind of depth of sound. That's how I became fascinated with the acoustics. . That's when my curiosity about the unknown was born.

videoAs far as the radio is concerned, I'm exactly the same way. When I was a kid, I used to tune the radio in the middle of the night and hear North Korean broadcasts, English, and other languages I didn't understand mixed in, and I loved listening to them. Also, my parents bought me a toy walkie-talkie, but its performance was so bad that it picked up the cab radio (laughs). (Laughs.) Even over such mixed signals, if you tuned it right, you could faintly hear the music.

side (transverse) mountainYes, yes! Especially Sunday night is the best time to receive.

Interesting, you two, you are exactly the same.

videoBut this time, I wanted to use a lot of radio noise in the album, so I bought a radio, but the tuning is not the same now as it was when I was a child, with a faint, distorted sound. So I had to buy a lot of junk used radios, and I had a hard time creating the sound.

I think one of the key points is that VIDEO's music has a streetwise or outgoing feel to it, even though it is made by home recording and sampling.

video_ckb010

videoI think it is also influenced by the fact that I like to walk and drive. . and I like to listen to music in the car. I like to hear it sounding amidst the noise, partly because of my childhood influence, and even now when I write a song, I mix it, check it in the car, and repeat the process.

side (transverse) mountainSame! (Laughs)

video. So, it's a home recording, but it's not too secretive.

side (transverse) mountain. And while there are many subtle nuances, it is not "incomprehensible music. I can't explain it, but it is very concrete and direct. I think it's great that there is a pop strength to it.

For example, in "Ushihama," it's not like, "If you don't know about a town called Ushihama in Fussa, you're screwed," right?

side (transverse) mountainPeople who listen to it wonder, "What is Ushihama?" I think.

videoIf I didn't know, I would be attracted by the mystery of the word (laughs). Fear and curiosity, you know .

side (transverse) mountainUnidentifiability is important! Tiki is a real example of this.

It's the kind of shading that doesn't make it just resort music.

side (transverse) mountainIt's darkness (laughs). It's not "Mulholland Drive" (2001) , but there is that feeling.

video_ckb011

videoWhen I went to Fussa, I found a CD-R of a radio program that was broadcast in the 50's in the U.S. at a general store, and while listening to it while driving on Route 16, I heard a very exotic oldies music. I drove further and came across a tea plantation, and listening to the oldies while driving through the dark tea plantation was just like driving on Mulholland Drive. I thought to myself, "Where is this road going to lead me? I'm scared!" (laughs).

side (transverse) mountainIt's very communicative.

videoNot only is it pleasant or fun, but I think fear is necessary in music as well. . Your jacket is just like that, too.

side (transverse) mountainCKB is a band where Mr. Onose (Masao) creates the nuance of fear. I think the guitar is an instrument that can express fear very well. The twangy sound with the scent of death, for example.

Recently, when VIDEO-san performs live with a band, the guitarist Yuichi Ushioda (Yuichi Ushioda) adds an exquisite accent that adds fear or intensity to the sound. In that sense, VIDEO-san may be in a similar situation to when Yokoyama-san brought Onose-san into the band in the past.

side (transverse) mountainYou mean a fellowship that expresses more concretely what you had in mind.

videoRecently, I have been playing live shows with a band formation that includes horns, percussion, and guitar, and I am very envious of the members of CKB. It would be difficult to find just one member who not only has the musical skills, but also the feeling for the music, and yet they are able to continue with such a large group.

video_ckb012

side (transverse) mountainIf it were hard, I would not have continued, but working with everyone at CKB is very easy (laughs). When I meet a talent like Mr. VIDEO, I get more and more inspired, and things I want to do keep coming up. In today's discussion, the keyword "fear" came up, and I may create something specialized in fear in the future, and I can't stop doing it.

From the point of view of the VIDEOs, having cool senior members running ahead of them will also motivate them to continue with their music.

videoYes, I think I will always be stimulated and influenced.

side (transverse) mountainIf I ever have an event like the "Aoyama 246 Midnight Tribe Night" (2000) that I did in the past, I will definitely ask VIDEO to be a part of it.

That would be a perfect fit for the "Yokowake Handsome World" in Hakone hosted by CKB, and VIDEO and his team also held the "Live in Hatoya 2014" event at the Hatoya Hotel in February 2014.

side (transverse) mountainLive in Hatoya (laughs)! Is that Hatoya in the mountains?

videoYes . Not Sanhatoya .

side (transverse) mountainYay! The one with the fire brigade! That's where the fire brigade is , after all. The last time CKB did a concert was in San Hatoja, but it had to be in the mountains. The song "Hattoya no Uta" written by Akiyuki Nosaka is also from there. I like it.

video_ckb013

So, I guess it is your dream or goal to perform together at "Live in Hatoya"?

videoI want to see CKB there too! Let's do it at Hatoya someday (lol)!
