Kengo Kakudate

Guitarist and vocalist of the band Yogee New Waves, born in Tokyo in 1991 .

Music that has a smooth throat, yet captures the essence of the music. I hope to get closer to that kind of music.

I am sure that many things have happened to you over the past year , but what do you feel and think about now, frankly? What do you frankly feel and think about now?

corner house. If I have two minds in my mind, one is simply "I'm going to do it. . The other is that I'm torn between whether I should break the foundation that I've built, or whether I should enjoy it a little more. After four years as a yogi, I have come to understand my own quirks, but since I call myself New Waves, I want to break the "quirks" of the world... I am thinking about it.

So you have developed your own "pattern"?

corner house: Maybe so. I want to struggle more, I want to eliminate efficiency, and I want to face the doldrums. I have an M temperament, so I pick on myself (laughs).

The music is straightforward, but when you listen to it, you can find its depth. Perhaps that is the nature of the music.

corner house. Yes, that's right. Generally speaking, works of art are considered to be absurd or esoteric, but I think that most of the music that is widely loved in the world has passed through the muddy realm of its creator and made its way into the world. This is something I had not noticed before.

I think your encounters with Keiichi Sogabe, Takao Tajima, and many other artists also had an influence on your work.

corner house. 3 years ago, I don't think I could have faced Mr. Sogabe and Mr. Tajima and talked with them. Since it is human beings who create artworks, I believe that everything reflects how human beings think and how they are growing. . I am still not there yet, but I am growing little by little, sharing the same feeling with them and having a common language. Music that is thirst-quenching, yet captures the essence of the music . I hope to get closer to that kind of music.

. Perhaps there are things we can share because we are creators of music that is widely listened to.

corner house: I'm sure that's absolutely part of it . But, for example, can't you talk to or get along with someone who is not involved with music? . It's not like that. The most important thing is whether or not we can communicate with each other on a fundamental level. At the very least, I believe that if you love people, you can be friends with them.

That sense of separation is one of the charms of Mr. Kakudate, isn't it?

corner house. as long as we can have a conversation in our souls, I feel like that's OK. . though I guess each of my friends speaks of that in a different language.

I like both when I'm alone and when I'm with others , and I should take care of both of them. It is something that will continue as long as you live.

Mr. Kasuya of Dram's Kasuya once said, "Kengo is always joking around, but how can he write such romantic lyrics? I don't get it! I don't understand it!

corner house. haha (laughs).

Do you feel like you have a role to play in the project?

corner house: Maybe that's something I don't understand these days. And I don't think I need to know. I went to London alone the other day and wandered around an unfamiliar city by myself, and felt the joy of being kind to strangers, which made me realize that I need time to face myself. I like both when I am alone and when I am with others , and I should cherish both of them. It's something that will continue as long as I live. Many people diverge from each other, but maybe both are necessary and don't need to be separated.

I think it must be very different for you to stand in front of people as an expressive person and to live your life as usual.

corner house. If you have a firm grasp of who you are, no matter how many people praise you or how many people belittle you, you will not waver in your axis of being. Let's train the core of your personality! . like. . I'm still a little wobbly myself.

I see.

corner house.: I need to work on chewing properly what I like or thinking about why I don't like what I don't like. In a sense, it is pleasant to dislike something without reason! is also pleasant in a sense, but it is better to go back and find out why you don't like it and why you don't like this taste.

. You are 27 years old this year.

corner house: Yes, it is. I am becoming an adult. But mental age is more important than actual age.

I have heard that it is necessary for an expressive person to keep the feelings, sights, and smells of the past that have passed through one's mind, and to retrieve them appropriately.

corner houseOh, that's great. I think the best music is the music that makes your mouth sing. You can remember exactly what was happening at the time. . It's a remarkable thing that music can help us remember vague things like memories while humming.

. yes. . sometimes it affects people beyond the author's intention.

corner house. Just like when you look at a work of art, everyone has a different sense of it. In the same way, I always feel that I am enjoying our music as an audience member. I have my own idea of the emotion contained in this song! But when someone else listens to it, something completely different comes into play. I hope that the audience and I can enjoy the music from the same perspective. I guess I feel like we are all siblings.

. that the wonderful thing about music is that it can accompany people's experiences and memories, which is the essence of what we call pop music.

. It makes me happy to see people dancing and enjoying themselves.

corner house. so. It's already great. People and people just get better and better with each other.

What do you think about the scale of yogis' activities?

corner house. I think I need to get into people's hearts and minds a little more, and have more people listen to me. There has been a change of mindset regarding this.

. Please elaborate.

corner house. What I want to convey straight away is that the wonderful thing about music is that it can accompany people's experiences and memories, which is the essence of what we call pop music. I think it's good to have music that people can hum along to like a rumor, or play on their iPhones when they are playing with their friends, and in that way, the music spreads more and more in their daily lives. I believe that if the joy of music overflows, it would be a wonderful world, and the song I wrote this time is about that.

Ah, I see.

corner house. to love and be loved by others . Seek and be sought after . We must not forget these things. I have experienced such moments, though not many, and have repeatedly been moved to write songs about them. I think that the beauty of people getting better and people becoming happy exists in that.

Through music, the artist and the recipient can relate to each other more deeply than through conversation or touch.

corner house: Yes, it's great, isn't it? Lately, I've finally come to appreciate EDM as well. I really like the idea of a space where everyone is dancing and having fun.

In a previous interview, I think you said that you didn't really know what it was like to go to a club and dance, but I see that has changed.

corner houseYou mentioned Keita Sano, a track maker from Okayama, who played a very sexy track. And everyone was watching and smiling. It was the essence of music. I think it is really beautiful to see a moment when an unrewarded person is rewarded, a moment when a person who was feeling inward turns outward, a moment when a person has a new thought in his/her mind.

. It is linked to the phrase "I will give you a bouquet of flowers" in Bluemin' days.

corner house. I think the lyric "I'll give you a bouquet of flowers" , this one line is everything. The beauty of the moment when such a feeling is born is similar to the spring weather.

Please tell us a little bit more about your thoughts on the album.

corner house. I was really happy that "Bluemin' days" turned out to be a good song. No matter how great the theme is, if it is not good as a song, it can only be good. . All that's left is for me to just be there for the people who listen to it. Go on, go on. Go on your journey.

Like my mother.

corner house: Yes, like my mother.

I'm sure we'll hear this song in many places this year, but do you have any live shows or tours planned?

corner house: I will do a tour of "Bluemin' days". Also, a one-man show at Shinkiba Coast. I think it will be the biggest tour so far.

It looks like it's going to be another great year for you.

corner houseI'm glad that we are able to reach so many people, even though we haven't changed much by joining a major label. . Also, having Matsuda at Victor is really great.

Matsuda-san may be....

corner house. . this is my guitar from my first album "PARAISO". He was a former member of the band.

I see! That was a surprise!

Matsuda.: I'm the director in charge of yogis at Victor. What can I say ... life is fun.

corner house: Yes, it is. Life is really fun, isn't it?
