Turning Imagination Into Reality "Nike Air Max 270

Dylan Lash tells the story of the Nike Air Max 270.

Nike's Air Max 270 is a perfect fusion of classic and modern technology. As the latest in the "Air Max" series, this is a very high-profile pair, but what first catches the eye is the heel unit, which is said to be the tallest in the series, mounted on the heel. Although it has a very large impact in parts, its design and coloring have a finish familiar to sneaker fans of yesteryear. We conducted an exclusive interview in Japan with Dylan Lash, the designer of the "Air Max 270," who embodied this exquisite balance. We unraveled the story behind this new classic.

. to create a modern interpretation of Nike Air .

First of all, what were you most conscious of when designing the "Air Max 270"?

Dylan.. When the "Air Max 270" project began, my first thought was to create a modern interpretation of the "Air Max 93" air bag and "Air Max 180" upper. . Then, as the project evolved, we began to feel the need to push new territory.

The Air Max 93 and Air Max 180 were still the inspiration, but we wanted to create something with its own identity and a new solution. When they came together, the Air Max 270 was born, with its distinctive heel unit and smartly designed upper.

Can you give us a brief description of the sketches you drew here?

Dylan. The diagonal line of the windrunner, which expresses Nike's unique sense of speed, was one of the references. In the Nike tradition, I used the angle of the toe when the foot is on the ground as a reference. It is very symbolic.

Next, the Air bag in the upper right corner is from the "Air Max 93," which was designed with the milk jug as its inspiration.

Dylan.. The original "Air Max 93" was inspired by the blowing molding of a milk jug. . It became one of the new manufacturing techniques in air units after the creation of the Air Max 180. Using this technique, the first Air Unit with 270-degree visibility was produced.

. And the bottom left is a picture of the heel support.

Dylan.: When I designed the "Air Max 270", I needed to stabilize the heel area, so the heel support is very much based on the "Air Max 180". . I was inspired by the lines of both the leather reinforcement and the heel clip.

. how to incorporate Nike's innovation into your lifestyle.

Please tell us about the functionality of the "Air Max 270".

Dylan.. The "Air Max 270" is a pair that was created from the perspective of improving the lifestyle of people who walk around all day long and are constantly on the move. At some point before we started the design process, we decided to innovate comfort, which is the opposite of the kind of performance that some athletes pursue with us.

It does not look at how fast you can get from point A to point B, but rather focuses on how comfortable you can remain when you are traveling from point A to point B over the course of a day.

Nike's sneakers are based on the premise of a sophisticated fusion of technology and design. What is the process of creating a design in general? Do you take a feasible technology as a basis and incorporate it into the design? Or do you draw a design freely, and then figure out how to make it a reality? Is this the procedure?

Dylan.. both of them. We always start with a new perspective. We approach every design with a new problem to solve. In the performance category at Nike, we focus on pushing the boundaries of sports and athletes to be faster, to jump higher, to be more agile, and to be more defined.

At Nike Sportswear, we focus on how to incorporate our innovations into lifestyles, how to improve the way we move in our daily lives. In the case of the Air Max 270, we asked ourselves, "How can we improve the Air Unit in the Air Max model to make it more comfortable?

From there, we considered a great many ideas through sketching and prototyping, and produced a number of samples. We worked as a big team to maximize the possibilities.

The result is that big air unit, isn't it?

Dylan.. walking on air . I think it's the greatest feat in footwear: a 26 mm Air unit was being manufactured , and it was already very high. . we wanted to make the "Air Max 270" bigger than any Air we had ever made. We were told several times that it was impossible, but we kept challenging ourselves to see how big we could make the unit, and we settled on 32 mm.

This allowed for a greater difference in thickness between the forefoot and the heel, and increased shock absorption in the heel. . and a heel unit that is the perfect height with a completely new impact, while still maintaining a universal standard.

What do you think is the most significant innovation of the "Air Max 270" in the long-established "Air Max" series?

Dylan.. it's also the largest heel unit, I think. . I think it is the biggest innovation in terms of both design and comfort.

I know that the Air Max 270 will be available in many colors, but which color scheme is your favorite?

Dylan.: Personally, I like the gold one best, which is also illustrated in the illustration. It gives the shoes their own identity and is a very fresh color. When I saw the Astrid Anderson show at London Fashion Week, I saw the effect of incorporating pops of color into the look.

. a philosophy handed down from Bill Bowerman.

Dylan, what has been your favorite design in the Air Max series so far?

Dylan.. my fave models are the Air Max 180 and Air Max 93. . so this project is like a dream come true for me. . It's like having two of my favorite models at the same time.

. Last question. Dylan, what do you always keep in mind when designing sneakers?

Dylan.. Our passion for light weight and comfort in our sneakers comes from Bill Bowerman, who was also one of our founders. He was only after what athletes wanted in a shoe, and nothing else.

Lighter weight sneakers lead to faster scores on the track. This belief is firmly embedded in Nike's designs. Designers are constantly seeking to create minimalist, lightweight sneakers that work with the natural movement of the foot.
