monessay ─ watch out for pickpockets

monessay - watch out for pickpockets!

This is "monessay," a series of essays by Toshiyuki Tsai, publisher of Huinum and editor-in-chief of Huinum Unplugged. It is an essay through objects, so it is called "monessay." There is no twist, but it is not a poop, either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Finamu. This time, I'm going to show you a long-sleeved polo shirt by LACOSTE.

No. 21 Beware of pickpockets

fI have been to Reims and Paris several times. The oldest was around 1984. Several times since then, probably less than double digits, but close enough.

school (e.g. of ikebana)When I first started out, I was advised by my seniors to beware of pickpockets. They told me to be on my guard not only in tourist spots but also on street corners and in the subway. The moment you take your eyes off your luggage, it will be snatched away.

giHe also told me to be especially careful with P Fat women and children. If they approach you, be sure to run away. If you see someone, think of them as a thief.

PakistanAlthough not a ri, I have had the unpleasant experience of being followed in Rome by a middle-aged woman who looked like a homeless person. She obviously tried to put her hand in my pocket, but she was young. The middle-aged woman was no match for my agility.

ba (Haitian dance music)In Barcelona, something that looked like bird droppings fell on my shoulder, and when I turned around, a shabbily dressed middle-aged man and woman gave me a tissue. I was not sure what was going on at that moment, but it seemed that they were trying to take something from me while pretending to help me with the bird shit on my shoulder. I understood what they were trying to do and got out of their hands, which saved my life.

yo!Even today, there are many petty crimes such as pickpocketing and robbery in Europe. You should be very careful when traveling.

eachJanuary 2012 is the Paris Collection season. Several apparel business staff members will be traveling to Paris to prepare for the runway shows. The Finam team will also head to Paris to see the shows of various brands as reporters.

young (animal)In January of 2008, two of our staff members were robbed by a pickpocket in the Paris subway. Both of them were robbed of their passports and wallets. One of them had put his passport on the bottom of his bag and his camera on top of it. However, he said that the camera was left in place and what was underneath it was snatched. It was the work of a professional, as if he was trying to avoid being detected by the change in weight. I wonder if the person who didn't notice the camera was being rummaged around in the bag was a professional, but I guess it's a job that requires a certain level of professionalism. It was the day before I was to return to Japan. I could not catch my scheduled flight.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)This is not the only reason, but personally I am not very motivated to go to Paris. There is a lot of dog shit on the streets, and shopping is not as affordable as it used to be due to the exchange rate against the Euro and rising prices. Paris used to be about shopping for me, but that has faded a bit.

school (e.g. of ikebana)The first time I went there, I was so excited that I went to J.M. Weston on the Champs-Elysées to buy a pair of loafers. They made me wear a size that was too tight, but they wouldn't listen to me even if I said it was too tight. They would tell me, "This is your size," so I had no choice.

nextI tried to find "St. James" and "French Laco" in Paris, but no matter where I went, I couldn't find these items. In Tokyo, import stores (select stores, as they are called now, were not called in those days) usually sold these items, but in Paris, it was difficult to find them.

fI remember at the time that Lentilaco was only available in Tokyo.

light (e.g. colour, color)In the mid-1980s, Lacoste production began to shift from France to developing countries, and French-made Lacoste became scarce. I was an import-crazed person who would not allow myself to wear products made in developing countries, and insisted on French products. It is stupid to think about it now.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)Polo shirts made in developing countries in the U.S. are now made in France again. However, these are apparently not distributed in Japan. The ones sold in Japan are said to be made in Akita Prefecture.

from ...For me, the polo shirt is this one. As a rule, they are short-sleeved, but I am rather happy with long-sleeved ones to wear in early spring. I have never seen long-sleeved polo shirts in other places.

comeThe company is the headquarter of polo shirts.
