Takanori Akiyama / Stylist

Born in Saitama Prefecture. He is a talented designer who mainly appears in men's magazines such as "Men's Non-No". He has an established reputation for his styling that skillfully blends his own roots in street and sports styles with the atmosphere of the times.

More than half of the caps he owns are New Era caps.

Do you have anything in particular that you keep in mind or are conscious of when dressing in everyday life?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnMy age is now in my mid-30s, so I have recently started to wear simple, relaxed items. I often coordinate with a plain long T-shirt and slacks, as I do today. There used to be a time when I liked to wear edgy items that I would only wear for one season (laughs). But now I choose clothes that I can wear five years after I buy them.

When I think of Mr. Akiyama, I have a strong image of him wearing a hat on a regular basis.

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI have always worn a hat and sneakers on my feet. Wearing a hat and sneakers on my feet has always been my style. My hair is curly, so it's a hassle to set it (laughs). So a hat has always been a necessity for me.

Incidentally, as a stylist, how do you view the recent headwear trend?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI think bucket hats and long-brimmed hats dominated the trend until recently, but I think that trend has calmed down a bit now. I am now more interested in baseball-type caps such as those made by New Era.

What kind of hat lineup do you have?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI have some hats, some brimmed caps, and a lot of knit caps. But I think I have the most caps with brims. I probably have more than 30 of them at home.

And New Era was among them?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnOf course. Probably more than half of my shirts are "New Era" shirts. I have mostly "59FIFTY®," which has a flat brim.

Why "9TWENTY™" matches a wide range of generations.

What are your honest impressions of the "9TWENTY™" with the rounded brim that you are wearing right now?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI think it is simply mature and good. That is exactly what I was talking about earlier, and it fits my current mood.

You mean something simple and calm.

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI often look young around me, and I feel a little complex about it. I am often seen as young by those around me, and there is a part of me that feels a little complex about that. And since "59FIFTY®" has great support from the street, I sometimes end up looking too naughty depending on my styling. Normally, I was careful about the combination of clothes to avoid that, but this "9TWENTY™" seems to create a calm atmosphere no matter what kind of coordination I put it with.

How do you feel about it?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnThe rounded brim is one of the reasons, but I think the overall appearance of this item has an American casual look that appeals to adults. It simply wouldn't be out of place if people of a generation older than ours were to wear this item. I think the appeal of this item is its appearance and silhouette, which can be worn by a wide range of people, from traditional adult men to street kids.

I see.

mountain that has the appearance of autumnThe other thing is probably the high cost performance. I like the price setting where I can get change for a 5,000 yen bill. If you try on an item at a store and really like it, but the price is higher than you expected, it will be a blow to your heart (laughs). But with this item, I don't think I have to worry about that.

When did you get your first New Era cap?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI was a high school student. I liked the street style at the time, so I remember going to Ueno to buy some to match.

What items did you purchase at that time?

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI'm wearing a navy Yankees cap like the one I'm wearing right now. New Era has a strong connection with sports, with major leaguers and NBA players wearing caps. I have always played basketball, and I also like to watch baseball games, though only as a hobby.

I see.

mountain that has the appearance of autumnIn Japan, it has a strong image as a street and fashion brand, but in the U.S., it is also well known as a sports brand. I think that is why it is loved by a wide range of generations. The fact that this "9TWENTY™" matches many people's styles may be due to such duality.

Lastly, please tell us how you recommend coordinating the use of "9TWENTY™".

mountain that has the appearance of autumnI think this item goes best with American casual style. So, I think it would be more mature to add it as an accent to an orthodox outfit of a B.D. shirt and chinos. I think it is also possible to wear this over a shirt tucked in and tied with a tie. On the other hand, if you make it too sporty, it will make you look too young, so I think you just need to be careful about that.
