The xx has arrived at the ideal soundscape.

Interview with The xx

The ideal soundscape that The xx has arrived at.

The London trio X-X made a splash when their debut album "X-X" suddenly won the Mercury Prize, the UK's highest music award. Their dark electronic sound and melancholic melodies attracted attention in the fashion scene, and member Oliver Sim was even chosen as a campaign model for " Dior Homme ". Since the release of their second album "Coexist" in 2012, Jamie Smith has been making new moves such as starting a solo unit, Jamie XX, and they have completed their first new album in four years, "I See You". We interviewed Oliver, who is currently in Japan, about the new album, which he says, "For the first time, we were able to honestly create the sound we wanted to hear.

Your new album is a new sound for the band.

Oliver.. thank you. I'm very happy that people are making similar points this time around . . but I didn't consciously set out to make an album like that. . that we were open to all new influences and elements. . and I think the fact that we left our hometown of London and made the album in another part of the world gave the album a sense of openness.

Why did you decide to record overseas this time?

Oliver.. in order to grow, we felt that we needed to get out of our comfort zone. . London is home, and we are comfortable there, but recording in the same places we have always been would not help us progress. . So we decided to record where we are interested in.

Are there any places in particular that stand out in your mind?

Oliver.. Each one was impressive in its own way, but if I had to pick one, I would say Marfa, Texas. It was the first place we recorded, and it's very remote. The people there are half cowboys and half artists. I really liked it. So for the music video for the song "On Hold," Alasdair McLaren and I went back to Marfa and shot it.

. I heard that you traveled by car in the U.S.

Oliver.. we always traveled with five people. . three members, the manager, and a friend of Jamie's named Stevie. Jamie and Stevie took turns driving the car. We stayed in cheap motels where cockroaches were roaming around, and we got a taste of the real America (laughs).

Do you have any experiences or memories from your travels that are reflected in the album?

Oliver.. of course. . this album reminds me a lot of my travels. I was listening to Fleetwood Mac and the Beach Boys in LA, pop songs on the radio in Iceland, and soft rock and country in Texas. I think that's why this album is the most pop-oriented of our works.

You didn't start out with the idea of making a pop album, but the experience of traveling led you to make a pop album, didn't it?

Oliver.I think that's part of it. . Also, we have more confidence in ourselves than before. . We don't feel shy about expressing ourselves in a pop way anymore. We can express our love for pop music in a straightforward manner. This album is full of our experience and confidence.

Until now, have you been under pressure to write "sharp songs rather than pop songs"?

Oliver.. I think the first album was made by a mystique, a limitation of not knowing what to expect. For the second album, we knew what people wanted from us, and we made the album with that in mind. For the second album, we knew what people wanted from us, so we made the album with that in mind. This time, we got rid of all of that and just made the sound that we wanted to hear. So, it was the most fun album to make.

Has Jamie's solo album had any influence on your last album?

Oliver. We were inspired by going to see Jamie's project as an audience member, but most of all, we thought, "We want to be on stage again!" We missed the stage. . We missed the stage, or rather, it ignited our desire to make music. . and being a part of his record made me want to create a sound that was less X-rated and more about enjoying making music more than ever. I think the fact that Jamie came back to X-X with more honed talent and experience through that project also had a positive impact on the album.

What changes have you personally experienced in the making of your new work?

Oliver.. My songwriting method has changed a little bit. Before, we didn't have much experience as a person, so the lyrics were based on our expectations of what we wanted, or on what we heard from other people, not on our own experiences. But now that we have grown up, we have started to base our songwriting on our own experiences. So nowadays, songwriting is like therapy for us. Writing songs allows us to reevaluate what we are thinking.

I heard that XX's songs are often written before the lyrics, are the lyrics important?

Oliver.. before, but now I can do it in many different ways. I can come up with a melody first, or Jamie can bring a sampling and we can start from there.

For example, how did you come up with the first single "On Hold"?

Oliver.. at first there were no electronic sounds at all, just bass and guitar. We started out with no electronic sounds, just bass and guitars, in a singer-songwriter style. Then we tried different versions, some more electronic, some more band-like, and finally, with the addition of Jamie's sample, we finally had something we felt comfortable with. The samples really solidified the songs. We tried different versions of the other songs and refined them from there.

You spend a lot of time discussing the songs before they are completed.

Oliver. We all like different things and have different opinions, so it's hard to put them all together. For example, Jamie is more interested in the melody and the development of the song, while Romy (Maddie Croft) and I are more interested in the lyrics. When we all agree on something, we say, "It's done! We all agree on what we want to do, and then we say, "It's done! . The most frustrating thing for me is when the original idea gets developed and developed, and then we end up going back to the original idea (laughs).

Are all three of you stubborn?

Oliver.I think X-X is made up of the three of us compromising. Luckily, none of us have very strong egos, and it works out well for us. Jamie, in particular, produces, so I think he is in a position to be selfish. He listens to our ideas, and if we ask him to change something, he changes it. I think he is a very kind producer without an ego.

By the way, how do you solve the problem when you get stuck?

Oliver.. for a week or so, try to get away from that music altogether. "Is it good music? Is it good music or not?" . . without thinking about it. . And then, we would play it for musicians that we respect.

What kind of musicians, for example?

Oliver.: When I was in LA, I was with Jenny from Savages and Stella from War Paint. They are all friends.

Do people give you frank feedback?

Oliver.. If you ask someone who thinks too much about our feelings, such as my mother, she will definitely say, "It's good" (laughs). (laughs) . We are very selective about who we ask for feedback.

What was the most difficult song for you to write this time?

Oliver.I started writing this song in 2013 and even recorded it once, but I wasn't satisfied with it. I almost gave up on it after recording it over and over again, but I'm glad I didn't give up on it. . I still wonder if it's really finished (laughs). (Laughs.) When I think, "The song is finished," I play it to my manager and other people I trust, and they say, "I see. How are you going to change it? I hate it the most. I'm waiting for them to say, "It's a great song, let's release it! But when I don't hear that, I don't know what I can do to make the song better. So I think it is important to be aware of what we can do.

I see. I see. I guess being aware of what we are capable of may give us confidence. By the way, you were a campaign model for Dior Homme, but how did you feel about doing something other than music?

Oliver.. Although it didn't directly influence my music, the Dior Homme show gave me the opportunity to meet Raf Simons and many other famous people. . The experience was very stimulating and beneficial to me.

So, if you were offered modeling or acting jobs, would you like to do it again?

Oliver.: (shaking his head vigorously) No, no, no, I'm done (laughing). . now I have what I do best, which is being a musician.
