Testimonies from those fascinated by jujutsu. Stylist Tsugumi Wataru

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has been gaining momentum over the past few years. To borrow a phrase from Antonio Inoki's "... To borrow a phrase from Antonio Inoki's "Don't hesitate to go, go, and you will understand", you will understand if you try, or to put it another way, the fun of jiu-jitsu is that you will not understand if you don't try. However, you have to know jiu-jitsu to take the first step, so we interviewed three people who are hooked on jiu-jitsu and frequent the "Carpe Diem" jiu-jitsu dojo. The third and final interview is with Tsugumi Wataru, a stylist who enjoys the support of numerous actresses and models.

PROFILE

Wataru Tsugumi

She has been active in a wide range of fields, including TV dramas, commercials, and magazines, and has a strong following among models and actresses. She is also an excellent cook and shows her skills on her YouTube channel. She has been practicing jiu-jitsu for about five years. Her belt color is blue.

. because it's more fun than keeping in shape.

. The photo was taken at the Hiroo Dojo before it was relocated.

What made you start Jiu-Jitsu?

Tsugumi:My husband has been practicing jiu-jitsu for many years , and he suggested that I try it if I was going to go to the gym. He recommended me to try jiu-jitsu. Before I started, however, I thought it looked like a simple, boring activity, just moping around on the floor, and I wondered what the fun would be in it. But he told me, "I don't think you can have fun unless you are productive (in any sport), but the more you do jiu-jitsu, the better you get at it," and when I started, I finally understood that.

Were you interested in martial arts in the first place?

Tsugumi:(I enjoy watching PRIDE (mixed martial arts) fights, but I never thought I would do martial arts.

How long have you been doing this? How often do you do it now?

Tsugumi:It's been about 5 years. (At the time of the interview), I was so busy that I didn't come to the office at all, maybe once a week or so. There was a time when I didn't come for six months.

It's quite a lot of exercise, but is it also a way to keep in shape?

Tsugumi:Well, it is very good for shaping since it uses abdominal muscles and there is a lot of butt lifting, but I do it for fun rather than to keep in shape.

As a way to refresh your work?

Tsugumi:I exercise my body, and as a result, it refreshes me, but I am more interested in learning techniques than for the purpose of refreshment. Everyone at the dojo is serious about jiu-jitsu, so inevitably I have to face it too. You take it seriously. I'm not very smart and I'm not very athletic, so it's very hard for me (laughs).

. In terms of stress relief, boxing or striking seems to be a better fit.

Tsugumi:Jiu-jitsu is difficult, but on the contrary, I enjoy the difficulty of it. When I can't do a technique, I feel frustrated , wondering why I can't do such a simple thing. . I am thin and have no muscles, so I am not interested in punching or striking. . jiu-jitsu is fun because I can do it even though I am small. . Also, when I can do the correct movements of jiu-jitsu properly, that's fun. . When I am able to come regularly, my body remembers. But if I don't come regularly, my body remembers, but if I don't come often, I forget quickly.

Carpe Diem is unique in that it has women-only classes (at its dojo in Aoyama and Hiroo) (*Men and women of any gender can participate in regular classes).

Tsugumi:There have been times when I have practiced and played against men, but I haven't done it too often. . it's a bit difficult because foreign men are powerful and big.
