After Corona, the number of bicycle users increased dramatically in the city. So-called "mamachari," or mom's bicycle, and electric bicycles such as e-bikes are also becoming popular. But the most common type of bicycle I see is the road bike. So, Mr. Sawabe of Tempra Cycle, please tell us about your company!

PROFILE
Minoru Sawabe is the manager of Tempra Cycle. . He enjoys a variety of activities on his days off, from city riding to downhill riding and even trail running.
To begin with, is there a difference between a road bike and a pisto bike?
Sawabe: First of all, the name "pisto bike" is a term coined uniquely in Japan.
I didn't know that.
Sawabe: With that in mind, a pisto, as it is known to the public, is a bicycle that has no braking device and goes forward by stepping on both the front and the back.
That's what bicycle racers use, isn't it?
Sawabe: Yes, it is. First of all, I think many people misunderstand what I said earlier, but as far as brakes are concerned, a pisto bike is a bicycle that moves forward and backward as long as you step on it, whether it has brakes or not. Originally, fixed-gear frames used by bicycle racers were sold cheaply overseas, and messengers took notice of them. They said they were sturdy, fast, and easy to maintain due to their simple construction.
I see.
Sawabe: Since they were cheap at the time, messengers from overseas were riding them all the time. It was imported back to Japan as a street item.
I see. So, what is a road bike?
Sawabe: Road bikes are, roughly speaking, drop handlebars with a frame design that allows for speed. Frames used in races that demand speed, such as the Tour de France, are mainly flat, known as aero shaped, which reduces wind resistance as much as possible, and can only be equipped with narrow width tires.
Giant and Louis Garneau are road bikes, while Surly is also a road bike, is that right?
Sawabe: . except for a few models, but broadly speaking, yes. . not wrong.
. It's difficult to separate the living from the non-living.
Sawabe: The road bike industry is also broadening its scope, and recently there has been a "gravel road" model that can be fitted with thicker tires in the shape of a road bike. The larger tires provide more air volume and cushioning, so they can be ridden off-road as well. . Recently, the number of people who ride gravel roads for fashion has been increasing.
. There was a lot of word of mouth about road bikes, but in short, the term "road bike" is used in a very broad sense.
Sawabe: Yes . Here's what we recommend.
Recommendation 1: Salsa cycles/Casserole (Ms. Sawabe's personal possession)

. The base is a touring bike (largely a road bike). The base is a touring bike (largely a road bike), but customized for city use. The handlebars were changed from drop bars to flat bars, and a basket was added to make it possible to travel within a 10 km radius, commute to work, and go shopping. It also has mudguards so it can be ridden in the rain. Please refer to our customization page for more information.
Recommendation 2: Salsa cycles/Journeyman

Aluminum frame gravel road bike. The standard wheel size is 650B (average size for mountain bikes), but the frame design allows for 700C wheels, the same size as road bikes. The bike is also equipped with a large number of platforms for carrying carriers and other equipment to allow for bikepacking.
Recommendation 3: Salsa cycles/VAYA (tempra Custom)

Chromoly (steel) frame gravel bike. This model is more suitable for on-road riding among gravel road models, but the wheel size has been changed to 650b for more comfortable off-road riding. The handlebars have been flattened for easy riding in town.

What do you wear when you ride your bike? Sew Literature Lab has been looking into word-of-mouth and found that there are some lambs out there who have no idea what to wear and are having a hard time figuring it out. . The first thing that comes to mind is something functional....
What do you think most people who ride on the road look like?
Sawabe: The most common image people have is a tight-fitting top and bottom cycle jersey, but to be honest, everyone has his or her own style. There may be no correct answer.
. I see that many people enjoy their own style of fashion rather than this fashion because they ride a bicycle.
Sawabe: There is no set style. You can ride in any outfit you like.
Come to think of it, I don't see many people using messenger bags these days.
Sawabe: That may be the case there. Many people use backpacks. . and then there are those who attach a basket and put a tote bag or an eco-bag in the bonnet.
. In terms of bicycle fashion, the choice of a helmet is also an issue.
Sawabe: Many people choose helmets because of their appearance, but I would recommend that you buy one made by a specialized manufacturer if possible. Just as camping equipment should be made by a camping manufacturer, helmets should be made by a manufacturer that makes helmets for bicycles.
. But Japanese people don't look good in helmets....
Sawabe: Some people say they don't wear helmets because they look bad, but recently manufacturers have started to develop models for Asian countries, so there are more and more models that are easy to wear. Although it has not been institutionalized, I would like people to wear helmets if possible.
Do you have any tips on how to wear a helmet in style?
Sawabe: . It is also recommended to wear a cycle cap with a shallow brim inside. Since bicyclists often appear on Instagram and international street snaps, you can also refer to such places.
