Ryo Miyoshi is the director of 1LDK. He is active not only in store direction and buying, but also in the production of original items.
Reebok's classic CLUB C 85 (hereafter referred to as "CLUB C"), which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2020. It was the model for the current work, and was also Miyoshi's favorite sneaker for a long time. This project was born out of a mutual love affair. The project started at "Iroha Sushi" in Nakameguro.
I was having a drink with friends at Iroha (sushi restaurant) before Corona became a big deal. At that time, he said to me, 'You are Miyoshi-san, aren't you? . We were both pretty much finished, but we didn't have anything serious to say to each other (laughs). But we were both pretty much finished, so we didn't talk about anything serious (laughs). About six months after that, I received a formal offer and we got started. I had been wearing the "CLUB C" sneakers collaborated with "JJJound (JJJound)" for a long time, so I was very happy. I have always liked white sneakers and the so-called court shoe genre, and I had worn many different brands, but CLUB C just felt right. They are neither too sharp nor too voluminous. I like the well-balanced silhouette.

This work was created through the "1LDK" style of subtraction, and anyone who looks at it will think it is beautiful. Although it is a model to which you can add as much as you want, did you have any hesitation in making such a clean and simple design?
I had already decided on a white base when I was approached. However, I had a hard time deciding whether to go with pure white or to add some color somewhere. So, I added a navy sole, which I like, and which also looks like "1LDK". If you look closely at the sole, you can see the navy in the clear color. I like the way it gives the sole a somewhat light feeling without making it too heavy. This was an idea from Reebok."

In the first sample in the foreground, the insole is beige and the tongue is printed in white. From there, the company made a number of improvements to the current look.
The "Reebok" is on the side of the CLUB C inline, but I was wondering what to do with that as well. I was wondering if I should keep the "Reebok" on the side and use the same color white, or if I could put our trade name on the side. But I also wondered if it would be okay to change the face of Club C. I was also concerned about whether or not we could alter the face of Club C. When we approached Reebok about it, they said, "Please, feel free to do so at 1LDK," and surprisingly, they readily agreed (laughs). (Laughs.) Since we were going to the trouble, we decided to go with "1LDK. I couldn't decide between white or navy.
. Since these are simple sneakers, Mr. Miyoshi continues, the ultimate choice was between two options that would greatly affect the direction of the design. Miyoshi continues, "Every time I had to choose between the two, I thought of the customer.
We didn't want to make an item for the experts. We wanted to make sneakers that would look nice and clean, not only to our customers, but also to people who are not that interested in fashion. I also received a question on Instagram from a customer who said, "I want a Club C, but I don't know which one to buy," so I made these sneakers as an answer that I could deliver with confidence to such people and customers. Therefore, I wanted to use high-quality leather, and I didn't want the price to be more than 13,000 yen.

They are both modern and "10 years old shoes," which makes sense in a strange way. . And there is a universality to these sneakers that would not make you feel any different even if you were to wear them 10 years from now. Perhaps the change in Mr. Miyoshi's lifestyle has had an influence on the finish, which seems to have removed the barriers of the times without adhering to trends.
I'm a bit bored myself, and I like new clothes, but I like classic shoes. Of course, I check out the new high-tech sneakers, but in the end, I come back to this kind of thing. On a personal note, when my children are born and grow up, I wonder what they will look like when I tell them, "These sneakers were made by my father. I don't think there are many fathers who can make sneakers (laughs). I want my children to wear them when they grow up, and I wanted to make them something that will make customers think, 'I used to wear these sneakers in the past.

This year marks 13 years since 1LDK was established. Mr. Miyoshi joined the company one year after its opening and has continued to observe the changes of "1LDK" as well as the changes in the city of Nakameguro. Today, the scale of the store has grown beyond comparison to what it was when it first opened, with locations not only in Tokyo, but also in Nagoya and Kyoto. But how is it that the axis of "1LDK" has remained unchanged despite the changes in the staff and lineup?
I was taught to "do what we can do ourselves" when I first joined the company, and that may still be the case today. I was taught this when I first joined the company, and I think it still holds true today. I started out as a store staff member, and all of the staff in the office have also worked in stores before. Perhaps that's why they all put the store first. Moreover, I think it is the staff working in the store who feel firsthand that they are blessed by the customers and reflect this in their actions. Even though we have different tastes and interests, that may be our common language.
The baton has been handed down for 13 years. I realize that the cleanliness and warmth of "1LDK" are the essence of its "character. However, it has not been smooth sailing. Perhaps the Corona Disaster was one of the cases in which the company's fangs were bared. This exclusive was actually scheduled to go on sale in 2020, the 35th anniversary of the Club C, but the circumstances led to the postponement of the launch. However, "Corona was not all negative," Miyoshi recalls.
Before Corona, I used to see my friends in Paris every time I went abroad on business . But now, I haven't seen them for more than a year because of this situation. But I thought, if we look at it from a positive perspective, sending sneakers could be a proof that we are doing well. . I also thought it would be a good opportunity to shorten the distance between us and our overseas acquaintances who are connected only through social networking sites. We have never met them, and we don't even know what kind of work they do, but we follow each other because we feel some kind of sympathy for each other when we see their photos posted on Instagram. I wondered what kind of photos they would post if I sent these sneakers to them. It's like correspondence. I didn't know if they would send cool pictures or even if they would wear them. In a way, it was an experiment, but I thought it was a way of making contact that was only possible in a situation like this. If it weren't for this situation, I would probably have taken them abroad and taken pictures of them myself. It is precisely because we are now unable to do so that I hope to deliver sneakers in a way that is only possible now.
An arrow of gratitude. It is not only directed overseas, but also straight to our friends in Japan through 1LDK's "Universal Products".
. 13 years and finally 5 stores. There was a day when I wondered how we were able to work with such a big national brand even though we don't have that many stores. I thought it was not only thanks to the customers of 1LDK, but also to the local stores that sell our house brand, such as Universal Products.
At first, we only made chinos, but when a dealer saw Universal Products, he said, "We want to carry them too. That was the start of our wholesale business, and the dealer still comes to our exhibitions. They deliver our products through their stores. There are people locally who are doing the same thing as our staff. That is very encouraging. I think it is because of the existence of such people that we have been able to continue for 13 years. I am truly grateful to the people around me. When I first joined the company, I had no idea that one day I would be designing for Club C."
