Takashi Kumagai and Atsushi Hashimoto. Two stylists talk about the gravitational pull of golf and the appeal of tangrams.

Golf is hot right now. Until recently, I was not aware of it at all, and even thought it made me look like an old man, but I am now feeling an irresistible urge to play it (as I did with fishing, camping, and sauna). (Fishing, camping, and sauna were also things I used to do.) Is it because Japanese professional golfers are active in the world? That may be so, but that's not the only reason. Perhaps it is because people in the fashion industry are all saying "golf is fun," and brands are springing up all over the place that will change the conventional image of golf wear.

At the center of this movement is Takashi Kumagai, who launched his golf wear brand "Tangram" at the end of May. We asked him and his fellow golf stylist Atsushi Hashimoto to tell us about the appeal of golf. What is the reason why he says, "Young people should start playing golf as soon as possible.

"Observe the dress code.
How to enjoy golf fashion.

How did you two get started playing golf?

Kumagaya:I started last September. It all started when Mr. Muto, the executive officer of ZOZO, suddenly took me to a course ...... (laughs). . Of course, I had practiced a little before that. But when I actually got out on the course and played, I thought, "Wow, this is fun," and that's how I got hooked. It seemed to make a good amount of sense, and I didn't have much trouble on the course.

Hashimoto:Of course, she has been practicing a lot, but we hold a competition once every two months among our friends in the fashion industry, and she has won the competition twice in a row. It's hard to believe that he started last year (laughs).

Kumagaya:My father was a good golfer, and he used to take me to the range when I was a child, so I guess I had some background in the game, although it was not something I had picked up in the past. But I also played baseball and tennis, so I didn't have any trouble with my swing. . I practice more than anyone else now, and I certainly feel that I am getting better (laughs).

Hashimoto:About 10 years ago, Mr. Doidi of BEAMS and Mr. Noda of BAYCREW'S invited me to play golf once, and I never had a chance to play again. Then, during the period of self-restraint after the state of emergency was declared, I suddenly decided to take up golf seriously again, and I started practicing with the proper equipment.

Kumagaya:If you don't practice a little, you'll lose your senses or your skill.

Hashimoto:Indeed . . but the feeling is coming back, probably thanks to practice.

How fast do you play?

Kumagaya:I play rounds twice a week, but practice 5 times a week. actually, I injured the meniscus in my knee, but recently it has finally recovered, so I hit 5 times a week. . When I was injured, I woke up at 4:30 every morning, came to this "Hilltop Yokohama Club," and hit 100 balls from sunrise. After my injury healed, I've been hitting 200 balls (laughs).

Hashimoto:When I heard that Mr. Kumagai had started playing golf, I was also inspired by him, and I started going to play golf when I had time, which is irregular. Until then, I was a "real golfer" who went to the course only for socializing (laughs).

Kumagaya:I used to score 110 or 120 on the course, but since I started taking lessons once a month with Takuya Taniguchi, I have enjoyed playing golf even more. I can now drive my driver 250 to 260 yards, and my score is now under 100. Mr. Takuya is also a graduate of Tohoku Fukushi University, so he taught me in a "Star of the Giants" kind of way. But I guess it was for the best (laughs). But golf has become much more interesting.

Hashimoto:It was quite , spartan, wasn't it? Maybe I should ask him to teach me too (laughs).

Kumagaya:After all, you have to practice. . because the more you practice, the better you get.

What do you enjoy about golf?

Kumagaya:Playing is fun, of course, but I also enjoy thinking about how to coordinate my outfits. I get excited several days before the round and even think about what to wear the night before. If it's a rainy day, I'll wear this, and if the weather is nice and warm, I'll wear this ....... If it's a prestigious golf course, I have to wear a jacket, so I'll match it with a blazer, and so on. I know I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, but I don't often do this even at work (laughs).

You seem to be really into it (laughs).

Hashimoto:Yes, golf is fun because there is a dress code. Depending on the location, sometimes a jacket is required to enter the clubhouse. . . jackets are also hard to come by these days. I'm not usually bound by such rules, so it's refreshing to be able to wear a jacket. Also, shoes are often designed as an extension of sneakers, such as Nike's Air Max 90 and Adidas' Superstar golf shoes with the same upper design. These things are interesting, too. It is interesting to be able to express individuality even in gear such as club head covers.

Mr. Kumagai's dynamic swing, with its pleasant sound, is the result of his five-a-week training and careful lessons by Taniguchi. This is the result of five training sessions a week and careful lessons by Taniguchi Pro.

Kumagaya:It's a gentleman's sport, so there's a lot of dress code. While we follow the minimum rules, I always want to look cool as someone in the fashion industry, so that part is interesting as well. That's why I started Tangram.

The Tangram head cover has an outstanding presence, even amongst the best head covers from PING, Callaway, and others. The fact that they are monotone, like the clothing, is also attractive.
