Design of the Tool

Logic of design without aesthetic formality by E5eyevan.

When you hear the word "design," what image comes to mind? If you look up the word "design" in a dictionary, you will find the following meaning. It is "a comprehensive plan for the design of a product that considers and coordinates the material, functional, and aesthetic qualities of the product with the various requirements of technology, production, and consumption.

EYEVAN" was created based on the concept of "glasses that can be worn. E5 eyevan, the fifth eyewear brand derived from E5 eyevan, was started by eliminating the "aesthetic formality" of such designs and pursuing the essence of the product as a tool. However, the resulting products are beautiful and truly "wearable.

The background and process that led to the creation of this new brand is also the path of designer Hirotaka Nakagawa's questioning and challenging of "design. In this interview, we will trace the path of Hirotaka Nakagawa with Taisuke Nakamuro of "Murofis," an old acquaintance and Ivan fan.

Hirotaka Nakagawa

PROFILE

Taisuke Nakamuro
Representative of Murofis

She has experience as store staff and press at select stores, and later established Murofis, which handles PR and branding for various brands centered on fashion. He then established "Murofis," a PR and branding company that handles PR and branding for various fashion brands, and while working as a PR director, he started his own bag brand, "MONOLITH," last year. He is an Ivan user and an old friend of Mr. Nakagawa's.

It made me think I was crazy, but in a good way.

I understand that the two of you have known each other for a long time .

Nakagawa: Yes, that's right. We met for the first time at an exhibition.

Nakamuro: Yes, yes. From there, I became a fan of Mr. Nakagawa himself and the glasses he makes. I have about six pairs of "Eyevan 7285," and I also use "Eyevol" and "10 Eyevan.

As a user, what do you find attractive about the glasses you make?

Nakamuro: This is just my personal opinion, but the glasses that Mr. Nakagawa makes are not just cool or beautiful. There are many such glasses in the world, but Mr. Nakagawa's glasses are different. When I wear them, I feel satisfied throughout the day. With other glasses, I sometimes feel like changing them.

Nakamuro: Perhaps that is because the attention to detail is extraordinary. Even the untrained eye can see that they are not made easily. I think the people at the factory must be driven by this attention to detail (laughs). Moreover, it is amazing that the differences between "Ivan 7285," "10 Ivan," and "Eyevol" are clearly differentiated from each other. 10 Ivan is the best example of this. When I heard about the concept, I thought it was crazy, but in a good way (laughs).

Nakagawa: (Laughter).

Nakamuro: For example, the screws in the "10 Ivan" series are not positive or negative, but star-shaped screws. It is not just an eccentricity, but rather a selection of parts that are backed up by their proper function, such as tightening tightly with light force. I am always amazed at the knowledge of each and every one of these parts. I am always amazed.

Nakagawa: I think it's an occupational hazard, but I have a habit of looking at parts of all kinds of things in my daily life, whether it's an iPhone, a motorcycle, or even a telephone pole on the street. If I go to a home improvement center, I can't go home (laughs). (Laughs.) But I never thought that Mr. Nakamuro would be thinking about such things. I am simply happy because I don't have many opportunities to talk about such things.
