Summer , 2016. The return of "1969" . Interview with never young beach and Awesome City Club .
1969. The legendary "Woodstock Festival" was held and the Beatles released "Abbey Road" . In that iconic year of rock 'n' roll, Gap was born as a jeans and record store. Since then, Gap has had a deep relationship with music. The current "1969 RECORDS" project focuses on the history of the Gap, and is being created with five artists who will pioneer the music scene in the 2010s and beyond. We interviewed members of Awesome City Club and Never Young Beach.
Formed in April 2014 . In April 2015, they released their first album, "Awesome City Tracks", which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Rock Chart. never young beach
After forming in the spring of 2014, the band sold out immediately after selling a limited run of 100 copies of their indie-psychedelic pop "HOUSE MUSICS" in a cardboard jacket. Their first album "YASHINOKI HOUSE" released in May 2015 was nominated for the "CD Shop Award" in the first half of the year, and they performed at FUJI ROCK '15. FUJI ROCK ROCK '15. Inheriting the DNA of the indigenous Japanese folk sound, their songs evoke the sunshine and dry soil of the West Coast, and are loose, comfortable, and somehow nostalgic. One of the most important bands in the current indie scene. On June 8, 2016, they released their new album "fam fam". http://neveryoungbeach.jp/
It's the year of Abbey Road . I have so many favorite bands and albums , so many. I can't even begin to tell you about them.
First of all, please tell us how the collaboration with Gap came about.
:
atagiWe were talking about making a music video. Gap approached us right around that time. We were just about to make our own move.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. it's an amazing coincidence.
Did you originally plan to use the song "Don't think feel"?
:
atagi. yes. The music and the concept fit Gap's worldview, so we decided on it right away.
How were the two members of NEVER YOUNG BEACH (NEVER YOUNG BEACH)?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): When we were invited, hey, it's from Gap! That's a great guy! We were like, "Hey, it's Gap! Because it's Gap!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. suddenly you're yo-yoing (laughs).
. Gap is running a campaign called "1969 RECORDS," which focuses on an important year in the history of rock music. The Woodstock Festival was held , the Rolling Stones and King Crimson released albums, and so on. What are your thoughts on the music of that era?
:
Matsushima. I like that a lot....
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. his voice is so tiny (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima: Neil Young .
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. from this side, I can't hear anything (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)Loud and proper!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima(speaking in a low voice) (Stretching out his voice)
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. the year of Abbey Road, right? I have so many favorite bands and albums , so many. I can't even begin to tell you about them.
I feel that Nebayan's music has a mood that is consistent with its time period.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)I don't really like it, to be honest. I think it's a little too austere. . But I think it's good that there is music that has been around for a long time.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagiI like black music from the 70s and 80s, and the late 60s was the eve of the dance classics, when the music was starting to move away from heavy funk and toward a more danceable style. I like the ruggedness of the music. . Personally, I also like King Crimson and the like. Sound-wise, I feel like they're getting a lot of attention again now. Fuzzy guitars and so on. (How about (PORIN) musically?
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
porinI guess so! Nothing in particular, I guess. Haha (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagiAfter that, the student movement was very active at that time, wasn't it? My father's generation. Even in Japan, there were many fashion-conscious students who became activists or became politically active.
Did you know that Gap was founded in 1969 as a small boutique selling records and jeans?
:
PORIN. didn't know .
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: You found out about it through this project. It's very nice, isn't it?
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). we had never heard of it before either. I can't imagine that from the current Gap.
We really compete with materials! We are really all about the material.
By the way, did the four of you know each other? I think they were at the same festival.
:
PORIN: Rush ball! Ah, Bay Camp, I think.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: It's not the festival, is it?
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORINOh, I've seen you in the studio!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. I knew both of you before this band started.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). I also knew atagi from his previous band. I liked it.
King Nurarihyon.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). yes, that's right. I'm glad I played something with one foot or something.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: Eh, I mean, how do you know?
. I know. . I guess that kind of background changes the way you look at things.
:
atagiAbe: I get the feeling that you have not changed since then, and that you have always sung in the same way. Your sound has evolved, though.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): Yes, I do. . because I like singing. I haven't changed much. I've always been like that.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: I had seen it for a long time and thought it was a very cool stance to take.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): Ohhhh! I'm so glad to hear that.
I think the band scene is on the rise. Do you feel that you have a role to play in the pop and rock scene?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): I carry the scene ........ To be honest, I don't have that at all . We are not good at that kind of thing. . We simply want to have fun without thinking about it.
We want to continue to make what we think is good, without worrying about our surroundings.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). yes . That's what it comes down to.
. pure motivation.
:
PORIN: Nebayan is a very pure image. Natural.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). they are all ugly, so there is no point in trying to be cool.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)I'm not! This was a topic of conversation among the members the other day, but there is a scene in the beginning of Awesome's music video where the two of you high-five in front of the Gap store. What do you think would happen if we did that? It's too funny just to imagine. I wonder how many cold comments and youtube clips (bad marks) we would get (laughs). (Laughs.) So we have to be natural. We are trying to do what suits us.
. Did you arrive at your current expression as a result of this process?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). yes, we really do! We really compete on materials! We are really all about the material. But I was saying earlier that the materials are not good enough (laughs).
I want to do what only Awesome can do, and I think there are things that can only be done under the current circumstances.
Let's go with the ingredients!" Let me make this the headline (laughs). What about you two from Awesome?
:
PORIN. you're playing a role. I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I've been thinking about that.
. - I'm looking at the big picture.
:
PORIN. Yes, that's right. . I would like to make music that reaches people at home naturally. The band itself has only been together for about three years. The reason we call ourselves a "club" rather than a "band" is that we are a collective. The reason why we call ourselves a "club" instead of a "band" is because we are a collective, and we want to be flexible in any way we can. So, we will be more flexible. It's really just the beginning.
. - I can feel the will to play in the middle of pop music.
:
atagi. On the other hand, I think that if I don't love music, I won't be able to persuade people. . I would like to be more deeply involved in music.
. I thought that Awesome has both a sense of acting and a sense of management.
:
PORIN. I think I have a bird's eye view of the situation. It goes along with what I said earlier, but I want to do what only Awesome can do, and I think there are things that can only be done in the current situation. It may be that we are in a state of flux.
Wear Gap , and have fun together! . that's what I think is natural and best.
How did you decide on this PV project?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)I don't know if this is the right thing to say, but for a band of our size, we have a very small budget to spend on music videos. But with this offer, we were able to spend more money than usual! (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)We decided that we would like to do something we have never done before and just have fun (laughs). (Laughs.) We came up with a lot of ideas during the conception stage. We had a lot of ideas, such as renting a gym and boxing or wrestling. Or we could rent a ferry and travel in style (laughs). After we worked out the schedule and other details, we were able to rent a barbecue place. Fishing is fun. We did it! It was like, "This is great! This is great! Wearing Gap and having fun together! That's what I thought was natural and the best.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. looks like fun (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). it was a lot of fun. We caught a lot of fish , and we had some drinks. Yes! And best of all, we got to ride in a microbus! We usually travel in a Hiace. And the Gap guys brought us Starbucks coffee and snacks along the way. We were like, "Oh, it's so good, it's so great!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. You could see it in the music video.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. yes, that's right. But all the members can't touch fish or anything. They would ask for help (laughs)! (laughs) I think, "Why don't you do it by yourself? (Laughs.) I think to myself, "You should do that by yourself!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). but I felt sorry for him when I was catching the fish.
I understand. It looks painful.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): No , there is no pain because fish have no sense of pain.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). I was alive just now, and now I'm going to eat it. I've become an adult, haven't I?
I almost made it a kid's item . They are really cute.
I think I have become an adult through this music video shooting (laughs). The music video for "Awesome" was shot in an actual store, right?
:
PORIN: Yes . It was an actual store. I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. It was a late-night Ginza store.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. The director is Mr. Toichi, with whom I usually work. Normally, you can't go into a store after it closes. It was very exciting for me to shoot the video there. By the way... Unfortunately, Gap did not bring us any Starbucks (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORINSandwiches! We did get some delicious sandwiches! (Laughs)
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: Yes, that's right. I'm kidding (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. we decided that we couldn't shoot the film in one day, so we shot it over two days. . Thanks to the cooperation of all the staff, we were able to proceed quickly. . I am most grateful to Gap for allowing us to go ahead with such a reckless project.
Did you choose the clothes you wore?
:
atagi. Yes, we consulted with our stylist and chose the items that we genuinely wanted to wear.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN: I chose them while I was allowed to look at various items in the press room, but I mostly went for the kids' items. They are really cute.
What, were you wearing a kid's size?
:
PORINI recommend it! Because it goes up to size 160 or so, so you can wear it at all!
I like the idea of girls wearing Gap Kids. . It could be a fad.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): (grinning)
How were the two Nebayans?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)No, now that you mention kids, I remember trying to get Suzuken, the drummer, to wear a kid's size (laughs). (Laughs.) In the same way, the stylist and I chose together what we liked and what we didn't like.
. I thought it had a very personal feel to it, and I thought it fit very well.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). I could choose the exact same kind of clothes that I own. So, it was the same as usual.
What kind of clothes do you usually choose?
:
Matsushima.: They're all old clothes.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). Secondhand clothes. I buy them in Shimokita and other places.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. really often I'm in Shimokita. Sometimes, I seem to be in two places at the same time.
What do you mean? (Laughter)
:
atagi. I see him here and there, so much so that I wonder if he has an alter ego and exists in two places at the same time (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)I heard that Mr. Matsuzaka of Awesome seems to frequent the restaurant we often go to. I live close to Shimokita for a long time. We have been friends for a long time.
What kind of restaurant is this?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). is a restaurant called "FILM" in Shimokitazawa.
. It is a store that is often mentioned by name. How do you two in Awesome choose?
:
PORIN. I also have a lot of second-hand clothes. . I go to a store called "BOY" in Shibuya whenever I have time.
Kakudate-san of yogee new waves (a band belonging to the same roman label as Nebayan) said that he often goes there, too.
:
PORIN: Oh, yeah . Oh, I had a conversation with them the other day in an article about that store. I'm good friends with the staff, so it's easy, and I go there often.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. I often buy from secondhand clothing stores. I like a store called "LEMONTEA" in Ikejiri-Ohashi. My friend Matsuzaka also likes secondhand clothes.
Recently, I've seen a lot of vintage clothing at Gap. It naturally goes well with vintage clothing.
:
PORIN. indeed .
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. I really like the 90's patterned stuff.
What do you think of the other artists in this project?
:
Matsushima. you are good friends with the members of HAPPY.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)Bob comes over to my place and we play potluck, and Chew and Syu come over to my place and we play games.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORINI don't know!
What they have in common somehow is that they have a street feel.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)We are not in a position to tell other bands what to do.... We can only do our own thing. . Since other people are also being shined upon in this way, I think that they are all facing their own music.
I see. You are consistent, Mr. Abe.
:
atagi. I'm very interested (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. it's a mess (laughs).
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. My impression is that it's probably good that they have completely different musical styles. However, what they all have in common is that they all have a streetwise feel to them. People who seem to be playing on the street. I think this sense of life-size is what makes them so cool.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN. Indeed. . I ran into some HAPPY people in my neighborhood the other day.
Were you originally acquainted with the members of HAPPY?
:
PORINI'm sure we had a lot of fun together.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi: HAPPY is a gush of energy, or youthfulness.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
. Please tell us about your latest news and future plans.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). We have a one-man show at WWW in Shibuya on Saturday, July 9. . Oh, I saw an ant walking on Matsushima's arm just now.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:Matsushima.: There were spiders there earlier, weren't there?
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORINWhat the hell is this?
. Oh, I'm kind of sorry (laughs). . Please give us an update on Awesome, too.
:
atagi. on Wednesday, June 22, the band released its third album, "Awesome City Tracks 3.
They will be appearing at many events during the summer, so please check their official website for more information.
It's so abuzz. I can see the set list.
On Tuesday, August 9, you will be holding the "360°Virtual Music Fes," the culmination of the Gap project.
:
PORINI'll be there! Looking forward to it!
Have you ever seen a live performance using a device called VR?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China).: We don't have any. Oh, is this like the Nintendo 64?
. well, like a virtual boy.
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China): Yes, that's right! Virtual Boy!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. what is it, what is it, what is it . Oh, wow, wow, wow. The screen moves . Amazing.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)(putting it on) Oh! That's great! Why! Eh! Why? This is amazing. But is that it, or do I just hold my IPhone like this?
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Matsushima. No, it's okay, because this is the only world I can see.
It's called immersion, isn't it? Let's see... Let's hear your enthusiasm...
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)Can I see a live performance with this?
The camera will be placed on the stage , so you will be able to see a 360° view from there.
:
Matsushima. can you see the customers? You mean before the front row. That's great.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). amazing.
This is a very unusual project. You can see many things that are not usually shown in the film.
:
PORIN. it's not abuzz. I can see the set list.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)I'm not sure if you can come to my side or not. Isn't that what you mean?
It's like being a member of the group.
:
Matsushima: Heh - that's great.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)Can I see it on my cell phone or something? On a computer, it's like this , isn't it?
. you can see it on your smart phone. Well, something enthusiastic (laughs).
:
all of us: LOL!
Electricity was transmitted through our strings and out of the amp. Everyone catches it. We become one living organism.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). Well, I don't think there is anything special about it. I want to have a good live show.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
MatsushimaI tend to look at the camera all the time, so I need to be careful about that.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). anyway, I want to have a good live show.
What do you mean by a good live performance?
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China)No, it's like the earth, at the molecular level, or energy, or whatever. It's the groove of the audience. The electricity is transmitted through our strings and comes out from the amps. Everyone catches it. We become one living organism. When it comes together perfectly, it's like, "Oh, that was a good day.
Then you can laugh while watching the VR and say, "I knew Nebayan had an ugly face!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
all of us: LOL!
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
Ministry of Revenue (Tang-dynasty China). I think the people who will see it (VR) will look at the person who looks like this when they see it up close, or the person who uses this kind of equipment.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
PORIN.: It's special to be able to see places that you don't normally see. I will pay attention to places that I would not normally pay attention to.
long vowel mark (usually only used in katakana)
:
atagi. because I'm sure I'll get some good inspiration. This time it's not hosted by a music field, so I personally think that will be interesting. That alone is refreshing.
