SEIKO Prospex Diver Scuba Limited Edition Produced by LOWERCASE
Yoshikage Kajiwara & Motofumi Ogi - What we seek in a wristwatch. ~Motofumi Ogi
Now that we can check the time on our smartphones, we need a reason to wear a wristwatch. As a fashion item, as a product, or as a luxury item for adults. What are the key persons in the Tokyo fashion scene, Yoshikage Kajiwara and Motoshi Ogi, looking for? The two men's conversation centered on the DiverScuba, a masterpiece from Seiko Prospex, which was produced by LOWERCASE, which Kajiwara presides over, and of which an additional model was released this season, and the role of a modern wristwatch and how to choose one.

A wristwatch is a "gadget" that tickles a man's fancy.
-First of all, what does a wristwatch mean to you two?
small treeI think that the object of a man's desire has not changed in the past or in the present. A man's desire to have art at hand, a car, a study, and so on, are all part and parcel of a man's desire. I think a wristwatch is one of those desires. Someone once said about art, "If you hang a good painting in your room and look at it every day, you will come to notice things you never noticed before. By looking at it every day, you can check your own growth.
marshlandI think there is a certain aspect to it, but personally, I think that the way it is used to be has changed compared to the past. In the past, a wristwatch was a symbol of "status," but nowadays I think it is considered a "gadget" in the broad sense of the word.
small treeWatch: wristwatch = gadget. Well, that may indeed be true.
marshlandIn the past, the word "gadget" referred to digital devices, but today, it is commonplace to select cars, sneakers, and wristwatches as if they were gadgets. I think Hiroshi Fujiwara was a pioneer in this field, but aside from that, I am sure that the function of checking the time has been replaced by cell phones and smartphones, resulting in a paradigm shift in the selection of wristwatches.
It is attractive because it is over-spec.
-The "Seiko Prospex DiverScuba LOWERCASE Produced Limited Edition" produced by Mr. Kajiwara also has such a "gadget sense" that was important to him. I guess you mean that you have valued such a "gadget-like" feeling?
marshlandYes, it is. One of the appeals of gadgets is that they are "over-spec," and the DiverScuba has advanced specifications as a full-scale diver's watch.
small treeI think Japanese people in particular have a preference for over-specification, and gadgets are sometimes more attractive when they are over-specified.
marshlandThe DiverScuba is a full-fledged diver's watch, and its solar-powered quartz movement is the latest and greatest in terms of functionality. However, if that were all, it would be a commodity compared in terms of price and cost performance, so we added fashion value by adding the essence of the current trend of American casual wear.
A watch in this position was not likely.
-How do you feel when you actually wear it?
small treeIt has a good weight and a luxurious feel. And yet, it is priced in the 40,000-50,000 yen range, which I think is very attractive. I don't think there has ever been a watch in this price range in this position.
marshlandYes, I don't think there was. Because there wasn't, that's what I was aiming for.
small treeThe diver's watch itself is attractive as a fashion item, and the details of this "Diver Scuba" are also very appealing. This model has an impressive tanned look on the dial. It looks like it could easily fit in with the American-casual hand of today.
This model is available at a limited number of select stores. Check the URL below to find out which stores are participating! The vintage-style lumibright with a tanned look is impressive. Common specifications: solar charging function / reinforced plastic outer case protector / stainless steel case / silicon strap / 200m air diving water resistance Left "SBDN043" ¥40,000+tax, Right "SBDL041" ¥50,000+tax *Shop List : Japanese only www.seiko-watch.co.jp/prospex/sea/diverscuba/lowercase/stores
small treeOn the other hand, this one with blue coloring gives a fearless impression. I often wear denim, so I think the colors are easy to match.
This is a limited-quantity model with a refreshing summery blue color. Solar recharging function / reinforced plastic outer case protector / stainless steel case / silicon strap / water resistant to 200m air / left "SBDN045" ¥45,000+tax, right "SBDL045" ¥55,000+tax *Both limited to 5,000 units.
Seiko's underlying strength that I realize once again.
small tree: That said, both models have a nice design and color, but they also have a high quality feel. And yet I think the pricing is great.
marshlandI was surprised at the high quality of the samples. I myself was surprised at the high quality of the samples each time I received them.
small treeI feel that Seiko's underlying strength has been demonstrated once again. In talking with people from overseas, I was once told, "Why don't Japanese people use Japanese models in fashion shows? Since then, I have started to reevaluate Japanese goods and brands. Seiko is one of the brands that we should be proud of in the world, isn't it?
marshlandWhen I used to work at BEAMS, there was a kind of import supremacy among the people around me, including myself, but at some point, there was a revolution in our consciousness. We thought, "What's good is good enough. I hope that the "Diverse Scuba" will help more people to understand the appeal of the Japanese brand Seiko.
