Jimmy Logan, a crippled coal miner who has lost his job, his family, and his life, has a plan. He has an unprecedented plan to steal a large sum of money during a NASCAR race, the largest motor car event in the U.S., which will soon be held. Jimmy quickly enlists his brother Clyde, a dull bartender and ex-soldier who lost one of his arms in the war, and his sister Mary, a hairdresser and car enthusiast, but the Logan family, who have been neglected by their luck, are not up to the task. To pull off this daring crime, he enlists the help of Joe Bang, a professional bomb-maker and eccentric who is currently serving time in prison. The plan is to break him out of jail, blow up the racetrack's safe, and return him to prison before the guards are aware of his absence. On the day of the race, Logan's gang breaks into the basement of the track, where the pneumatic tube facility carrying millions of dollars in sales proceeds is located.
