When you think of *Freitag*, you probably think of a brand that makes bags out of truck tarps. I imagine that image has already taken root among the general public, but this news story turns that notion on its head.

The brand is launching a new premium collection called “FREITAG REFERENCE.”

While staying true to the brand’s roots in innovative upcycling, this collection embodies an unprecedented level of refined beauty. The collection kicks off with four bags. Let’s take a look at each one.

R201 ELLY ¥59,200

This is the Essential Bag with a 1.5L capacity. It can be used as a shoulder bag or a handbag, of course, but you can also attach the shoulder strap to carry it crossbody or over the shoulder. The main compartment features a magnetic closure and is large enough to hold a folding umbrella or a 500ml plastic bottle. It also features a zippered inner pocket, allowing you to organize your belongings.

Above all, the patina on the tarp—the way the material has faded and aged over time—adds depth to the bag’s character, reminding me once again of its value as a one-of-a-kind piece.

A day-and-night bag you can use from morning to night. This one can also be worn as a crossbody or over-the-shoulder bag.

While designed for walking around town, it also offers plenty of functionality. The three-stage magnetic closure lets you adjust the capacity, expanding it from 8L to 12L. It can even hold a 13-inch laptop, making it perfect for work as well.

It also features a slim pocket for AirPods, a wide pocket that fits an A6-sized notebook, and two inner pockets, making it incredibly practical.

Our lineup also includes a spacious tote bag designed to accommodate a variety of lifestyles. By folding down the sides, you can adjust its shape and capacity, which ranges from 26L to 40L. The main compartment closes with snap buttons and features an inner pocket that fits A5-sized items, as well as a zippered inner pocket.

In addition, it comes with a pouch that’s convenient for storing small items and valuables, and since it’s removable, you can also use it separately.

A sophisticated baguette bag. Its distinctive silhouette complements both elegant and casual styles with refined elegance. It can be worn as either a shoulder bag or a handbag.

Key features include slim open pockets on the front and back, allowing for quick access to your belongings. It also features a slim pocket for AirPods, a wide pocket that fits an A6-sized notebook, and two interior pockets.

When you look at these four bags, you’ll notice that they’re quite different from previous bags. Although the raw materials are the same, they’ve been transformed into such sophisticated designs that you can no longer recognize them as tarps.

In addition, the magnetic clamps—engraved with the brand logo—are particularly striking. Inspired by the serrated metal hooks used in factories to secure shelves on heavy-duty racks, they exude the brand’s distinctive character.

Another feature of this collection is that it comes with a pouch that serves as a repair kit, separate from the bag itself. It contains scraps of the lining fabric and the original sewing thread, which comes in handy should repairs ever be needed.
