Harlem is located in the northern part of Manhattan. Although it is said that the situation has now improved, there was a tense atmosphere in this area in the 1980s due to the lack of public safety. Once in Harlem" by photographer Katsu Naito, who moved to Harlem, which certainly had a special atmosphere at that time, and repeatedly interacted with the city, is now available.
When I had been living in New York City for three years, I went to Harlem to explore. . It might be more appropriate to call it a "liver test" given my living environment at the time. In my backpack was a 35mm camera and two lenses. An exposure meter and several TRI-X lenses. For safety reasons, I would look around only when I felt the urge to take a picture, and only after I was sure of my own safety would I take out the camera. I started to dislike that behavior halfway through the trip. It was as if I was taking pictures while hiding. Something unnatural . I wanted to photograph a harem of people without any irrationality.(omitted)
Once in Harlem" is Naito's second book. It is a special work that Naito was able to capture because he lived in Harlem 26 years ago, when the city was both icy and strangely uplifting at the same time.
