Portland, Oregon, is a city where craftsmanship and manufacturing by a small number of people are deeply rooted. North St. Bags" is a handmade bag brand produced by a small number of people in a store and microfactory in Portland.
The company was inspired by founder and designer Curtis Williams' experiences while volunteering at a bicycle, woodworking, and sewing workshop in Berkeley, California. According to him, he was not satisfied with the bags that caused pain in his back, and he went on to develop the bag.

The brand name "North St. Bags" is taken from the name of a street in Montpelier, Vermont, where Curtis grew up.
