Temple" is an unprecedented new wristwatch brand born from the encounter between product designer Kazuhiko Hayakawa (CEKAI) and Nanyasu Seiko, a company that has been involved in the manufacture of watches for over 30 years in Nagano Prefecture, a place famous for its watches.
Its design approach is fresh.
It has been more than 100 years since the wristwatch spread throughout the world, and the events and zeitgeist of each era are woven into its design. At Temple, we view watch design as "the crystallization of history and culture that symbolize the era," and rather than reissue the products of individual watch brands, we rework watch designs from each era from our own unique perspective and reissue them in the modern age with high quality and at a reasonable price.
The first models, "1910S-CG01" and "1910S-SS01," reissue watch designs from the 1910s, the dawn of the wristwatch era, with the thick forms, dials, and iconic hands seen in watches from 100 years ago re-edited and incorporated into a modern size balance. The design is characterized by a modern balance of size.
There are a total of eight variations: two body types, two dial types (black, white), and two case types (gold, silver).
Let's take a closer look at its ingenious details.
The first is "a balance between a nostalgic form and a modern size. In the 1910s, when the custom of wearing a watch on the wrist was not yet widespread, most wristwatches were small, using a women's pocket watch movement. The round case and the large dragon head are remnants of the pocket watch. The watch follows this form and is finished in a modern size balance while retaining the atmosphere of the time.
Next, "Arabic numerals and luminescent paint stand out on the dial. The ceramic used as the main material for the dial at that time is reproduced, and the characteristic Arabic numerals, which can be said to be a remnant of pocket watches, are placed on the dial. In keeping with the specifications of the time, when visibility during air travel was important, the large Arabic numerals are generously coated with luminescent paint.
And "faithful reproduction of "cobra hands". This is a faithful reproduction of the design of the hands commonly known as "cobra hands" from the 1910s. The shape is often seen on aviation and military watches, and is so called because the tip of the hand looks like a cobra. The hands also feature luminescent paint for excellent visibility. The color of the hands reproduces the blue color produced by a technique used in those days of searing iron to oxidize it and make it rust-resistant.
The movement and anti-magnetic design combine quality with a reasonable price. For the movement, we have adopted a high-performance quartz movement made in Japan for ease of use, accuracy, design, and a reasonable price. In these days of daily contact with magnetism from PCs, smartphones, and other devices, problems caused by magnetism are common. In order to give the MAGNETIC RESISITANT 4800 anti-magnetic performance, a special structure has been adopted to protect the movement from magnetic forces. The price is expected to be around 30,000 yen.
All models are finished in universal designs that can be worn by all genders, ages, and occasions.
This approach is to take watch designs that have been accumulated in the archives and re-edit them, updating the design and functionality so that they are applicable to the modern age. As an approach that is different from the watch industry, I think this is a realistic answer. The classic design matches with any gender and style, so it will be useful as a practical piece.
