Running is my creative outlet. It means a lot to me to create apparel and footwear that supports the running that I spend a certain amount of time doing every day. I don't know why, but I have always had a strong desire to express my emotions through my apparel.
Rather than expressing the meditative elements of running with GYAKUSOU, I am thinking more about making everyday running more comfortable. For example, if you like fashion, wearing GYAKUSOU may make you want to run.
One of GYAKUSOU's main goals is to update the look of runners by using muted colors that blend well with the urban cityscape. So I wanted to collaborate with Nike to create running wear that combined my aesthetic in design with Nike's functionality and technology.
From the beginning, GYAKUSOU's color palette has used neutral colors to blend in with both urban cityscapes and natural landscapes. We also consciously use earth colors and traditional Japanese colors. Only this time, however, I tried to incorporate contrasting color use.
GYAKUSOU literally means 'to run backwards', and as the name implies, I also run backwards in the park. This symbolizes the rebellious spirit that also leads to my punctures. I don't run specifically to set a goal or train for a race; running is a part of my life, just like any other runner. I hope to continue running in the future."
