He picks up discarded cardboard boxes on the streets of 30 countries around the world and transforms them into cute and cool wallets, attracting attention from the perspective of "upcycling" (the idea of boosting the value of things through design), Corrugated Cardboard ArtistFuyuki ShimazuThree.
The world view resonates with the artist, and he has received offers for exhibitions and workshops from all over the world, including Ace Hotel, and has been featured on NHK and in other domestic media.
Mr. Shimadzu is a man of international reputation, but he continues to transform unwanted items (cardboard) into valuable ones (wallets) simply because he loves corrugated cardboard. The feeling of "I love corrugated cardboard" is what keeps me going. This feeling is not only the same as when he suddenly resigned from a major advertising agency in 2015 and became a cardboard artist, saying "I want to live doing what I always wanted to do", but it seems to be getting stronger. I want people all over the world to love corrugated cardboard. In such simple and pure activities, Shimazu says, "Anything has the potential to become something to be loved. It makes life a little bit more interesting..." Such is the message behind Mr. Shimazu's activities.
Three pairs of six people are invited to a preview screening of "Traveling Cardboard," a film that follows Mr. Shimazu, on Saturday, October 13, 2012. For details on how to apply, please see below.
This is a documentary film that follows Mr. Shimazu's encounter with a piece of cardboard and his warm friendship with the people he met during his journey to trace its origin over a period of three years.
A chance encounter in Tokyo with a piece of potato cardboard led to Shimazu's connection with corrugated cardboard that has since spread beyond Japan to the rest of the world. The film was officially entered and world premiered in the spotlight section of SXSW FILM 2018 (South by Southwest Film Festival), the largest entertainment festival in the world, which is highly anticipated by buyers and publicists as a major international film festival and a place to discover next generation creators. The film was also well received by the world. A journey that connects the purest and most heartwarming stories drawn by Ms. Shimazu's pure love for cardboard.
