The bilingual magazine "+81 (PLUS EIGHTY ONE)" has been translated in many countries around the world. Its gallery is located in New York City, in the "+81 Gallery New YorkK".
A Japanese artist, Sho Shibuya, has been hooked up with this gallery, which has been consistently holding high-profile exhibitions.
Shibuya was born in Fukuoka, raised in Chiba, moved from Tokyo to New York in 2011, and worked as an art director for Apple, Wolff Olins, Li Inc, and other clients, including Kenzo, Estee Lauder, and Away, before going independent. Currently, he has his own design studio, Placeholder, in Brooklyn, where he works in both design and art.
On a somewhat tangential note, I'd like to mention that just a few days ago, the Travel Culture Magazine, "TRANSITThe theme of "New York City has a Dream! , would be a wonderful example of a dream come true.
This exhibit, "WEEK," reflects Shibuya's daily life and cultural experiences in New York City, where he started creating works in 2015 , using the first letter of the katakana of each day of the week as the basis for his artwork, in search of something more than just his work as a graphic designer. He has been uploading one work almost every day since then.
The style, which changes from week to week, is truly experimental, projecting enamel paintings, paper cuts, and screen prints onto a variety of materials. The simplicity of the work itself and the repetition of the combination of materials gives Shibuya a sense of relief as a creation, and this has become a daily ritual.
Katakana, which are familiar to Japanese people, may give a different impression to viewers overseas.
No matter where they are in the world or what their nationality is, we are greatly inspired by those who are struggling forward. Moreover, it is a joy to hear that someone who grew up in Japan and has crossed the ocean is doing well in a very competitive market. If you are planning to visit New York during this period, please check out this event.
