Behind the catchiness of his work, there is an attitude like that of a researcher who is earnestly engaged with photographic expression and vigilantly repeats experiments. One of Japan's leading contemporary photographers, Yoshiyuki Okuyama, will hold an exhibition of his photographs entitled "Your Choice Knows Your Right.
WOLF'S" and "HEAD" are two specially bound books produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the legendary silver accessory store WOLF'S HEAD. In "Wolf's", 100 friends of the owner, Takuji Mikita, wear Hawaiian shirts made from unraveled kimono from the Taisho and early Showa eras, and Yoshiyuki Okuyama photographs them as they spend their usual time at the shop.
For about two years, starting in 2015. Mr. Okuyama made numerous trips to Sendagi to photograph Mr. Mikita, his friends, his collection, and the town of Sendagi. This exhibition consists of a series of those works.
In the process of taking photographs, Okuyama felt a mysterious attraction to Mikita's "love for what he chose" and thought that the self is not just the body and spirit of the self, but the events around it that tell the story. The works in the exhibition are all works that succeed in capturing the daily "choices" made by the artist over the course of two years.
