Exhibitions and events are held on an irregular basis by people who are related to or of interest to Matsushima-san and his associates, and the high turnout is a testament to the quality of their work. The high rate of hits is a sure sign that Matsushima-san and his associates have a good eye for the right people.
From Friday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14, "That over there," a photography exhibition by Shingo Kureya, skater and photographer, is being held at Paddler's Coffee.
Mr. Kureya presides over the "NOTES magzine," a photo book that is available at skate stores in Tokyo and elsewhere, and captures the skate scene in Japan and abroad. This exhibition features photographs taken by Mr. Kureya during his summer visit to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, through his viewfinder. The exhibition will feature the unique landscape of the Netherlands, which has formed its own culture within Europe, and skate photography from angles that are different from those often seen in skate magazines in bookstores.
In addition to the photo exhibition, a furniture exhibition by Kureya's friend Yagi Woodworking, "That One Over There," will be held at the same time. Chairs and vases made by Ken Shiro Yagi, a skater and furniture maker with a unique style, will be exhibited in the same space as Kureya's photographs.
Fresh photographs taken in Amsterdam, Holland , and clean furniture influenced by Scandinavian furnishings decorate the store.
What each of the photographs and the furniture have in common is their delicacy. On the other hand, it is not just my imagination that I feel a sense of humor and freedom unique to skaters among them. This is also reflected in the titles.
Landscape, people, or furniture . What kind of things do skaters, who have a unique way of looking at things, cut out and create? Please enjoy it with a cup of coffee.
