X-Y," a solo exhibition by the artist unit magma, consisting of Jun Sugiyama and Kenichi Miyazawa, will be held at the art gallery VOILLD in Nakameguro, Tokyo, from April 13 to May 19.
This is the fourth exhibition of new works since "STOP THE TIME" in 2017, and features 30 new works based on the theme of "imaginary games. The works are likened to pieces of a board game, and seem to be appealing to the viewer with their mysterious rules. They seem to question the rules, their meanings, and their necessity for those of us who are easily tossed about by our interest in the unknown.
Magma is a unit that has been creating a wide range of works from advertising art to scenography, furniture, and products, using all kinds of everyday materials such as resin, scrap wood, electrical equipment, and wood. They have created music videos and stage sets for Yuzu, as well as music videos for Kaela Kimura, Sakanaction, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and NHK's music program "Music Japan". . A large-scale solo exhibition held in Harajuku to mark the 10th anniversary of his activities is also fresh in our minds.
Magma's works are created through repeated collaborations between "objects" and "things" that transcend genres and eras, such as objects that were once discarded by someone else and objects that are part of someone else's memory. Each work is a collection of objects from different worlds, and the act of spinning a story through the collision of fragments is Magma's relentless challenge to find something that cannot be found anywhere else and to create a new expression in this age when we can obtain anything we want, and it can also be said to be a hope for tomorrow. This unique solo exhibition offers a glimpse of the new and the old. We are also making long T-shirts and T-shirts to coincide with the exhibition, so please visit the venue!
