Calligraphy artists manipulate letters at will and elevate them to the realm of art. Ryo Koizumi, known as GREENANDBLACKSMITH, has been attracting much attention in Japan in recent years, and will hold his first solo exhibition "GREENANDBLACKSMITH" at the gallery space of LOBBY, a street bar in Ikejiri-Ohashi. The exhibition will be held at the gallery space of LOBBY, a street bar in Ikejiri-ohashi.
This exhibition bears the name of Mr. Kurokawa's house. The exhibition is a compilation of his past activities, from his origins in brush calligraphy to his latest work, the "enso" series.
The "enso" series was inspired by Enso, a Zen calligraphy and painting in which circles are drawn with a single stroke. Based on Koizumi's belief that "a small accumulation of strokes will eventually lead to something big," as you can see, the circles are expressed not with a single stroke, but with hundreds of strokes.
It is a daunting task to even imagine, but by carefully drawing each stroke, the artist has succeeded in creating a warm and beautiful gradation that can only be achieved by hand.
Letters move across the canvas in all directions. It is precisely because we live in an age of computers and smartphones that we are able to feel the warmth and message that handwritten letters emit more strongly.
GREENANDBLACKSMITH is one of the artists we can expect to see more and more of in the future. Check out the first exhibition before people around you start making noise.
