Photographer.Tetsuo KashiwadaWhen I heard about the road trip, I thought it would be a great match.
After returning to Japan, I heard through one person that the motel was the center of the photo shoot, and I was almost convinced of this.
. and I've had a chance to look at a few photos taken in the U.S., and I believe I was right in my conviction.
The following are Kashiwada-san's words .
. at the age of 19, inspired by a documentary film about a trip through the United States, he began traveling and photographing.
. the first time I traveled to the U.S., I stayed at various Motels.
The Motel standing quietly by the side of the road, the dimly lit rooms even with the lights on, the people you meet at the Motel,
There were moments when I felt as if I was watching a movie, even though everything that was happening, everything that was happening, was supposed to be real.
. perhaps because it evoked a scene from a movie I watched when I was 19 years old.
. He was taking pictures as if to capture the scenes that remained in his mind as afterimages.
In 2017, he will compile them and present his first exhibition and photo book.
I started photography when I was 19 years old, and this year, exactly 10 years after I realized it, I put my heart and soul into this 'MOTEL.'"
It is evident that he turned his camera on the numerous motels and the people who stayed and lived in them and was absorbed in snapping away.
The photographs are full of colors and textures with a road-trip feel, and stir up a sense of travel. While most of the photos are soft and gentle these days, Kashiwada's sometimes thirsty and sometimes glamorous expressions seem to represent the vast country of the United States.
. Personally, I can't wait to see the full range of photos that I feel the New Colorists have to offer. Kashiwada-san's first photo book with a pop yellow cover will also be released. There will also be talk shows and other events, so be sure to check it out.
