A Tokyo-based brand that gains support mainly from young peopleHARE.and Huinamu have started a special project! The product we are bringing you is a rock t-shirt, one of the standard summer items with various graphics. Ken Kagami (contemporary artist), Nigel Graf (graphic artist), and face (illustrator/artist) were asked to create illustrations to be printed on this item. The T-shirts with the keywords "Tokyo" and "Rock" were finally completed! In this final installment, we asked Nigel Graf, who has been actively collaborating with fashion brands as well as doing client work for numerous magazines and catalogs over a career spanning nearly 20 years, about the concept behind this work. We asked him about the concept of this work.
The illustration is a sampling of artwork from the jackets of famous hardcore bands, a design that probably rings a bell if you know them. However, in my case, I did not listen to rock music that much, and I chose this design because I love the designer who created that jacket, rather than coming from the artist. In fact, that kind of innocent side is reflected in my style (laughs).
Since his student days, Nigel Graf has consistently been into hippy-hop music, and he likes to "dig" for music, culture, and art derived from hippy-hop, which is still a source of inspiration for his own works. He also wants to convey to people a new way of enjoying things that is different from the mainstream in today's age of information overload, which can be called the age of social networking.
One of the ways I enjoy hip-hop is through the culture of sampling. I used to be a DJ, and I liked the process of thoroughly digging into what I liked. From there, I often encountered rock, jazz, reggae, and other music. I think you will discover many things by digging into the design of this illustration as well. I hope that young people in particular will discover their own ways of enjoying music.

Like his favorite music, Nigel Graf says that the designs that come from his hands often have a sampling story and story behind them. We can feel not only the artwork but also the thoughts of its creator. Perhaps we can enjoy his works in such a way.
