T-shirts are the formal wear of summer. The number of T-shirts we wear increases in proportion to our age. Even if we know we have enough, it is probably human nature to loosen our purse strings when we find a good item.
Good news for such addicts. SELECT by BAYCREW'S, a much talked-about select store that opened this spring in Toranomon, is currently holding an event titled "Adult T" until the end of July. Vintage, art, craft, and remake T-shirts, all of which can only be found here, will be on display to whet your appetite.
Masayoshi Furumine, vice president of BAYCREW'S, and Hiroyasu Konno and Tadanao Matsuo, curators of the store, are responsible for planning the project. By buying from different perspectives, a lineup rich in diversity was achieved. From what perspective did the three masterminds collect the items? And what are their favorite items?

International events are on the horizon, and momentum is building for the sport.
Masayoshi Komine
. Born in 1974, he is the Senior Executive Vice President of "BAYCREW'S". He joined BAYCREW'S in 1999 and worked as a staff member at several stores before becoming the director of DEUXIEME CLASSE, the first CEO of LA CLASSE, and the CEO of LE DOME. . He is known as a big soccer fan.
Are these vintage T-shirts that you collected this time?
Furumine: Yes, that's right. Among the vintage items, we selected mainly sportswear. At BAYCREW'S, we have a "Genbutsu-buying" philosophy, which means that we buy items as they are sold on the streets overseas and sell them in Japan. We have a culture of bringing to our customers not only the items, but also the atmosphere and aroma of the place. With this in mind, we are offering vintage sports T-shirts that we purchased in Florence, Milan, Paris, and Marseille in the early summer of this year.
. Recently, vintage T-shirts with movie motifs have been popular, but it is interesting that you collect them from the viewpoint of sports.
Furumine: This year, there is a world-class sports festival in Paris, the UEFA European Championships in soccer, and many other international sporting events. I feel the momentum for sports is growing along with these events.
I have the impression that many of the designs are simple and sophisticated, perhaps because they have been collected in Europe. Are there actually more sports-related items still available?
Komine: I guess if you look for it, you can find it. In our case, we happened to find a soccer store in Florence, where we found many interesting things. It was a store where there was no information even on the Internet yet, so it was worth the trip to the site.
. Overall, I like the fact that the prices are conscientiously priced, even though the prices are rising in the vintage market.
Furumine: We don't add much to our prices here, but sell at prices as close to the local market as possible. Even so, the prices are still very high, and items featuring famous players are especially popular.
Please tell us about the three albums you recommend from the lineup this time.
DV TRANING VINTAGE T-SHIRT ¥11,000
Furumine: Here is the first one. It is a commemorative T-shirt for the French professional soccer team, Olympique Marseille, when they played AC Milan of Italy in the final of the "UEFA Champions League" in 1993. Marseille won the championship with an impressive victory. It is a miraculous piece of memorabilia that I found in Marseille, my hometown.
OM 1984-1985 VINTAGE T-SHIRT ¥14,300
Furumine: This one is from the FIFA World Cup held in France in 1998. It is a print of the national team of the host country, France, which won the World Cup. I think it is probably a boot, but it is nice to see it now. The size is large and easy to wear.
MAISON MELE VINTAGE T-SHIRT ¥13,200
Furumine: Here is the last one. . This one is based on the well-known David Beckham motif. Among athletes, Beckham is famous for his high fashion sense. In that sense, I think this is an item that can be worn in a fashionable way. I think it would be cool to wear a T-shirt like this with denim pants.
Art T printed with powerful graphics in a minimalist color scheme.
Hiroyasu Konno
Born in Hokkaido, Japan in 1977, he has been with Edifice since joining the company in 2001. With his wide range of knowledge from dress to casual wear, he was appointed as a buyer of the casual wear department in 2003. Currently, he is in charge of the entire brand as a conceptor. In "SELECT by BAYCREW'S", he also buys men's items as a curator.
Many of the items you buy are graphical in nature.
Konno: I was in charge of T-shirts in collaboration with Japanese artists under the theme of "art. However, I think the best T-shirts are those that are easy to wear. In that sense, I wanted to create a catchy item that would easily convey a sense of groove. We told the artists that we wanted to create something catchy that would convey a sense of groove, and basically, we asked them to use the T-shirt as a canvas to create their own graphics.
. Each item has a strong graphic feel, yet the minimalist use of color gives the impression of simplicity.
Konno: I was conscious of that. We had two artists work on this project, and we asked them to make the items chic without scattering the colors.
. What kind of artists did you approach?
Wataru Komachi T-SHIRT(WHITE) ¥22,000 / Wataru Komachi T-SHIRT(BLACK) ¥22,000
Konno: The first is an artist named WATARU KOMACHI. When I used to visit Paris in the early 2000s, I often saw stenciled art in the city, and it made a big impression on me, so I wanted to express that style in this exhibition. Komachi was also a frequent visitor to Paris at that time, and was influenced by such art and made collages of his own. These stories were linked in my mind, and that is why I asked him to participate in this project.
Wataru Komachi T-SHIRT (WHITE) ¥22,000
Konno: Like the item I am wearing, the monochrome items with black prints on a white body are actually an assortment of stencil prints, so each item is unique.
Konno: In addition to the stencil, we also had a silk-screen printed T-shirt produced. We asked them to create a collage of pictures on the walls and French words to create a powerful item, inspired by the streets of Paris.
TEXTILE PAINT T-SHIRT ¥11,000
What is the other artist like?
Konno: These are items from the "TEXTILE PAINT" label by Shu Murakami and "EDIFICE. Mr. Murakami expresses what he feels by silk-screening and painting, and we asked him to print a graphic on the theme of France. This item is sold as a set with a bandana.
Konno: The motifs are a collage of things found in the cityscape, such as a pharmacy in Paris, with Mr. Murakami's unique sensibility. Edifice" also offers black and white monochrome items, but the white and blue color scheme is a special color scheme for "SELECT by BAYCREW'S," which was created for this event. . I like the impact of this color scheme, but at the same time, it is refreshing.
. We find new value by modifying what was originally there.
Tadanao Matsuo
Born in Osaka in 1975, he joined the company in 2000 and worked as a store staff member and buyer at "Journal Standard" before assuming his current position as a conceptor. He loves the mountains, and while traveling back and forth between the city and the mountains, he acquires various ideas and applies them to his buying. Like Ms. Konno, she is also a curator at "SELECT by BAYCREW'S".
Matsuo: Many of the items you have created are very elaborate, such as treating T-shirts like vintage or remaking them to make them look completely new.
Matsuo: There are so many different kinds of T-shirts, from vintage to current, and with a wide variety of graphics. Among them, I thought it would be interesting to create T-shirts with a crafty feel by adding something to them.
By taking a fresh look at what is already out there and adding a few tweaks, we can find new value.
Matsuo: Journal Standard, where I do the buying, is also a store that specializes in this approach, so it is something I am conscious of on a regular basis.
SEVEN BY SEVEN REWORK HAND EMBROIDERY T-SHIRT ¥55,000
Matsuo: For example, this item from "Seven by Seven" is hand-embroidered in India on a vintage motorcycle T-shirt to match the graphics. This gives the item a very three-dimensional effect, and creates a look that cannot be achieved with prints. The vintage clothing itself is one-of-a-kind, but the addition of hand embroidery makes it even more unique.
INK CRACK BAND T-SHIRT ¥27,500
. This is also a bold remake based on an old T-shirt.
Matsuo: I ordered this item from a brand called "Ink" in Osaka, which remakes various types of vintage clothing. . It is full of Osaka's unique sense of playfulness, and it is interesting that three T-shirts are cut diagonally and sewn together into one piece. . This is a combination of band-related motifs, but there are also some that are combined only with horror movies, and the sense in how the motifs are chosen also shines through. Even with the same black body, the tone changes depending on the fabric, so I want people to enjoy the contrast created by connecting different colors together.
MICKEY MOUSE for SELECT by BAYCEW'S T-SHIRT ¥17,600
. This item is based on the royal Disney motif.
Matsuo: We added processing to the Disney licensed items sold at "Journal Standard" for this event. By applying a fading and crashing process, we have brought the items closer to a vintage atmosphere. . It is quite difficult to find vintage clothing in good condition, and the colors are mostly gray and white. . In that sense, I think I was able to create an item that was unlikely to exist.
Matsuo's items have a common 90's flavor.
Matsuo:Yes, that may be true. 90's vintage clothing has just the right amount of used and interesting design, and it fits the current mood. Items from that era can be a great reference when trying to create a slightly used look. It was also a time when I myself was very impressionable, so perhaps that's why I subconsciously created the items I did this time (laughs).
